You may have already heard the news, but there are great things happening at NoveList:

• Goodreads Now Available: All of the NoveList databases now include reader ratings and book reviews from Goodreads. This partnership brings the content of Goodreads, the largest social network for readers, into NoveList, the most popular readers’ advisory service among librarians. Readers and librarians now have access to a combination of resources that provide the most complete readers’ advisory service available.

• Easier to Find Read-alike Content: We have made it easier to find all of the great read-alike content in NoveList. In addition to the NoveList Read-alikes located on the right side of every Title, Author, and Series Detail page, we have added links to Title, Author, and Series Read-alikes at each record in the search results.

• Easy to find Author Information: Author information is located in one easily accessible location. The Descendants is based on Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2007 novel. Directed by Alexander Payne, the Hawaii-set dramedy about a man who bonds with his daughters after his wife falls into a coma stars George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, and Matthew Lillard.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 is the first of two films adapting Stephenie Meyer's 2008 final novel in her popular YA vampire series. Directed by Bill Condon, the film stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, and Anna Kendrick.

Due in movie theaters on December 9:
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is adapted from John le Carre's 1974 spy thriller--the first entry in the "Karla Trilogy." Directed by Tomas Alfredson, this remake stars Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Toby Jones, and Mark Strong.

Due in move theaters on December 21:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an American adaptation of the 2005 first novel in the late Stieg Larsson's acclaimed "Millennium" trilogy. Directed by David Fincher, the thriller stars Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, and Rooney Mara as pierced-and-tattooed 24-year old hacker Lisbeth Salander.

National Gaming Day Celebration to be Held at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will be celebrating National Gaming Day on Saturday, November 12th from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in the Library’s auditorium.

National Gaming Day @ your Library is an initiative of the American Library Association to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games.

During the Buena Park Library’s National Gaming Celebration, families will be able to participate in a variety of video, board, and table games. This will be a fun-filled afternoon for toddlers, children, teens, and adults. Children under 10 years-old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Why celebrate gaming? Studies of adult gaming found that patrons who attended gaming events at the library were more open to using other library services. Also, libraries report young users who have come to the library to play games come back to use other free resources, such as homework help programs.

Come celebrate the popularity and educational value of video and board games at the Buena Park Library on November 12, 2011 from 2:30-4:00 p.m.

Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library Announces 99 Cent Sale

For the entire month of November, 2011, the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library will be having a 99 cent Hard-Cover Fiction Sale. This is a great time to stock up on books for holiday reading. Come see for yourself the treasures you can find in selections ranging from thrillers to romance to science fiction. Cash is the only accepted method of payment. All Guild proceeds are used to generously fund and support Library programs and collections.

The Guild Bookstore is on the 2^nd floor of the Library, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. The Bookstore hours are Tuesday thru Wednesday from noon to 6 PM, Thursdays from noon to 7:30 PM, Fridays from noon to 3 PM, and Saturdays from noon to 4:30 PM. SAT Study Group for Teens to Meet at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library will be hosting an SAT Study Group for Teens on Saturday, November 5th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library’s small meeting room. This is a great opportunity for teens to meet with other teens who are preparing for the SAT. Teens will be able to use the Library’s computers to access Learning Express or HelpNow’s Test Center to take short practice sections of the SAT covering math, reading or writing. After taking the test, teens will work together to improve their scores by coaching one another in the areas they are strongest. Whoever said learning can’t be fun hasn’t joined the study group at the Buena Park Library.

Origami Extravaganza at the Buena Park Library

Children and children-at-heart are invited to an Origami Extravaganza at the Buena Park Library District. The event will be on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. (No sign-ups required.) Projects will be for ALL AGES ranging from easy to intermediate to challenging. Learn how to make origami jumping frogs, cranes, space rockets, peacocks—and more!! There will be lots of opportunity for practice before completing the final project using real origami paper. Come try your hand at paper folding!! ALL AGES welcome.

"Scout’s honor, I actually do use NoveList to find new books if I’m looking for something in a particular genre. NoveList is an online resource that many public libraries subscribe to, and I’m glad mine does. [NOTE: So does the Buena Park Library] It is a-w-e-s-o-m-e. From the first time I tried NoveList years ago, it has always made me happy and gives me good recommendations. Tell it what authors you like, or a book you like, or just keywords you want to read about. Boom! Book recommendations. And I love using it with family members, non-library-world friends, or library users and showing them how to browse around. You can get lost in there for hours following thread after thread and finding more and more books to put on your “to read” list. The K-8 version is great for kids too. I actually found a long-lost-childhood-favorite-book using NoveList after every other method had failed–describing the book to long-time children’s librarians, searching by keywords on search engines and other book sites, no dice. Love it."

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Heritage, Diversity, Integrity and Honor: The Renewed Hope of America

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
