Congratulations and Thank You, Buena Park -- The Library's Blood Drive was a Resounding Success!

The Buena Park Library District and the American Red Cross were terrific partners on Thursday, August 17, 2006, for the Library’s first hosting of an American Red Cross Blood Drive. Not only did the Library meet its goal of 24 donors, we beat it! The Blood Drive brought in a total of 41 units which, according to the Red Cross, will save 123 lives. So, on behalf of the Buena Park Library District, a special “shout out” of tremendous thanks goes to all the donors, both in Buena Park and from other communities, who came in to our facility on that day to donate blood. Excellent job, one and all!

“Many of the participants said that holding the Blood Drive here was very convenient for them, so we are hoping to have another one in April during National Library Week, April 15-21, 2007,” said Kathleen Wade, Public Services Manager. “We hope that our next one will be as successful as this one was.”

Vendor Recall Issued on Toys Given by Library's Summer Reading Program

A vendor recall from Highsmith due to lead content has been issued on bendable toys that many public libraries across the country, including those in Buena Park, used as prizes during Summer Reading Programs for children.

The toys, a bendable dog and cat (image right), were found to have 0.4 and 0.24 percent of lead. The maximum safety limit is currently 0.06 percent. The toys are roughly 3.75 inches long and are similar in shape to a lollipop.

“We’d like all children and parents to return these toys ASAP to the Buena Park Library District for safe disposal,” said library director Louise Mazerov. “We’ve got other reading prizes available in exchange for these bendable toys. We’ll be happy to replace them.”

According to The Star Press newspaper website, the Indiana State Department of Health has sent a letter to the Indiana-based distributor of the bendable toys to urge a voluntary recall. Stamped “Made in China,” no other identifying information is available. The matter has been referred to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for further investigation and follow-up.

The Buena Park Library District is having an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2006 in the downstairs auditorium. The American Red Cross has provided a couple of incentives to help donors get here: all participants will receive a coupon for a free “Skillet Queso” appetizer at Chili’s and everyone has an opportunity to enter a raffle to win a $1,000 gas gift card.

Nautical Memorabilia on Display in July and August

Nautical memorabilia are now on display at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. Mr. James Paterson, a longtime Buena Park resident, has been collecting maritime artifacts since the early 1960’s. A small portion of his large collection is on exhibit in the Library lobby now through the end of August 2006.

Mr. Paterson served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 - 1979. Mr. Paterson’s collection includes U.S. Navy magazines, crew books, postcards, signal flags, photographs, plaques, and pennants. Some of his most interesting relics are from the USS Dixie (AD-14), a “destroyer tender” which is a ship that provided repair and technical services to destroyers and other warships. A piece of the deck, a rivet from the hull and even a porthole from the USS Dixie are on view. One of the longest serving vessels in the Navy, the USS Dixie was decommissioned in 1983 and scrapped in 1993.

Also displayed are some memorabilia from the Cunard Line ships RMS Queen Mary and MV Britannic. Menus from 1937 evoke a time when transatlantic travel was mainly by ship.

Angels Baseball Hits Buena Park Library District -- August 16

Baseball fans are invited to come meet Bucky Fox, author of The Highflying Angels: Their 50 Greatest Hits, Pitches and Plays, who steps up to the plate with an author talk and book signing on Wednesday evening, August 16, 2006 at 6:30 p.m., in the 2nd floor Library Board Room of Buena Park Library District. The Buena Park Library is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, located between Knott and Western Avenues. Fox’s previous book, The Mets Fan's Little Book of Wisdom (available on Amazon.com), is selling in the gift shop of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He looks forward to talking about the Angels and fielding questions. Fox will have copies of the Angels book available for sale and signing at $8.00 per copy.

The Highflying Angels covers the team's 2005 American League West championship season, and highlight stars of the last four decades -- from Dean Chance to Nolan Ryan to Reggie Jackson to Tim Salmon to Bartolo Colón. Independence Day Closure -- Tuesday, the 4th of July

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, in recognition of the Independence Day holiday, resuming normal hours Wednesday, July 5, 2006, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m.

Buena Park Library District's School Library Card Campaign is Winding DOWN but HURRY IN by Saturday, July 1st!

This is for all the 2nd, 4th and 6th Graders from Saint Pius School, the Buena Park School District and the Centralia School District! Those "OPEN ME" library information packets you received at the end of school since April and this past month ARE STILL GOOD to get your library card and special surprise!

Get LOST in a Good Book -- New Summer Reading Program for Adults

Beginning July 3, 2006, all adults may sign-up for a new Adult Summer Reading Program happening at the Buena Park Library District, with generous funding provided by the Library’s support group, the Volunteer Guild. The theme for this inaugural program is "Get LOST in a Good Book."

Every adult reader who signs up will get a bookmark and a reading log to keep track of the books read. For the first book or audio-book completed, readers will get a pen and a bookstore buck to use in the Volunteer Guild’s book store. For every book finished, readers will get an entry form for the opportunity drawings at the end of the program for one of the five (5) fabulous gift baskets that are incentives to help make this new program a success. The gift baskets are "thematically arranged" and include a Spa Basket, a Chocolate Lover’s Basket, a Book Lover’s Basket, a Movie Lover’s Basket and an Art Lover’s Basket.

So please stop by the Buena Park Library District this summer to sign up for this brand new reading program. Sign-ups begin on July 3rd and the program ends August 12th. "Every Student Succeeds" at the Buena Park Library District -- Beyond the School Year, Too!

"Every Student Succeeds @ Your Library" is the school and library card campaign that began in April and is winding down this month here at the Buena Park Library District for the 2005-2006 school year. A crucial piece of information in the packets went home with over 4,300 2nd, 4th and 6th grade students from St. Pius V School, the Buena Park and the Centralia School Districts – a library card application and "special surprise" coupon! There was also program information for the children’s, and teens’ programs plus our new adults’ summer reading program starting June 24, 2006.


All these students are ENCOURAGED and WELCOME to bring in their new library card coupons until Saturday, July 1st, 2006, to get their new cards and their “Every Student Succeeds” surprise.

Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge Program -- Tuesday, June 20th

The Buena Park Library District will be presenting a free evening program featuring the Friends of the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge with Tim Anderson as speaker. The program will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower-level auditorium. The Buena Park Library District is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues.

Topics to be covered during the program include:

• A video presentation about endangered species living in Orange County
• The successes of the Refuge in endangered species recovery
• Opportunities for volunteering on our public lands
• A discussion of the state of this national heritage
• A public question and answer session

The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1972 on the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. The Refuge encompasses 923 acres of tidal salt marsh in Anaheim Bay and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It was established to protect and provide quality habitat for endangered and threatened species migrating through Orange County. The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge has an exhibit of bird specimens on display at the Buena Park Library through the month of June 2006.

Cancellation of Free Financial Planning Seminar on Saturday, June 17th

Please note: We have received news from the Society for Financial Awareness that a seminar that they were planning to run at the Buena Park Library District has been cancelled. The program, which is entitled, “Exploring” Your Options for a Quality Retirement, was to have been held on Saturday, June 17, 2006.

"Women of Mystery" Book Discussion Planned for July 2006

Women of Mystery is a compelling and innovative book discussion program provided free to libraries by the California Center for the Book. The Buena Park Library District will be hosting two simultaneous sessions of this program in the month of July. The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues.

One session will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm on July 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th; the other on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 pm-4:00 pm on July 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th.

In Week One, participants view and discuss the film, Women of Mystery: Three Writers Who Forever Changed Detective Fiction, which profiles mystery writers Sue Grafton, Marcia Muller, and Sara Paretsky, and delves into the worlds of their detectives. In Weeks Two, Three, and Four, books by Muller (Shape of Dread), Paretsky (Tunnel Vision), and Grafton (F is for Fugitive) are discussed.

100 attend the Imagination Celebration Event in Buena Park!

About 100 people participated in the Imagination Celebration event at the Buena Park Library District on Saturday, May 13, 2006. Disney Entertainment Presents gave a very interesting and informative “behind the scenes” look at the magic created by Disney Entertainment Productions when they prepare floats for the various parades around the country, including the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Afterwards all the children took part in a hands-on Monster Mash Workshop where, with the help of professional artist Margie Zuliani, they made their own MONSTER! A number of the creative creatures are on display in the Volunteer Guild’s Bookstore on the 2nd floor of the Library, located at 7150 La Palma Ave, between Western and Knott. The monsters will be “corralled” for about a month here, so come by and see how creative these children really are!

“We found out that a number of participants in our workshop had visited other Imagination Celebration events this same day, in the morning, so this really was their own “Imagination on the Move” weekend!” said Kathleen Wade, Public Services Manager. The Buena Park Library thanks Disney Entertainment, Ms. Zuliani, and Ms. Pat Wayne of the Arts Orange County organization for co-hosting this event here in Buena Park to represent our part of the annual Imagination Celebration.

More events with the “Imagination of the Move” theme are still being offered for the next few weeks and are brought to you by the Arts Orange County and Orange County Department of Education, as a presentation of the Imagination Celebration, “a county-wide spring arts festival for families, children and creative people of all ages.” For more details and events, please their website.

Free Financial Planning Seminar -- Saturday, May 20th

The Buena Park Library District is co-sponsoring a free financial awareness seminar with the Society for Financial Awareness, a California non-profit organization that provides financial education through seminars and workshops. The seminar, entitled, Legal lessons for Life, will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2006 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Buena Park Library’s 2nd floor Board Room, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, California. The guest speaker will be Arthur Swerdloft, a member of SOFA.

Topics to be covered during the program include:

• The best way to hold title to the home and protect it from creditors.
• Uniform Gift to Minors Act, does it help or hurt your children.
• Select the guardians for your children.
• Use a living trust to eliminate probate delays, costs and legal fees.
• Minimize the federal death tax by doubling your estate tax exemptions.

Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge Display -- May/June 2006

An exhibit about the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), a critical bird habitat located in Orange County, is now on display at the Buena Park Library District. Esther Cummings of the Friends of the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge has included some specimens of the birds that can be found in the Refuge. Among the birds displayed, you can see a snow goose, short-eared owl, California quail (the state bird) and a California least tern, an endangered species. None of the animals were killed for display - they died due to accidents. Also included in the display are maps, information on tours and volunteer opportunities at the Refuge. The display is on exhibit in the lobby now through the end of June 2006.
