Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library Announces 99 Cent Sale

For the entire month of November, 2011, the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library will be having a 99 cent Hard-Cover Fiction Sale. This is a great time to stock up on books for holiday reading. Come see for yourself the treasures you can find in selections ranging from thrillers to romance to science fiction. Cash is the only accepted method of payment. All Guild proceeds are used to generously fund and support Library programs and collections.

The Guild Bookstore is on the 2^nd floor of the Library, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. SAT Study Group for Teens to Meet at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library will be hosting an SAT Study Group for Teens on Saturday, November 5th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library’s small meeting room. This is a great opportunity for teens to meet with other teens who are preparing for the SAT. Teens will be able to use the Library’s computers to access Learning Express or HelpNow’s Test Center to take short practice sections of the SAT covering math, reading or writing. After taking the test, teens will work together to improve their scores by coaching one another in the areas they are strongest. Whoever said learning can’t be fun hasn’t joined the study group at the Buena Park Library.

Origami Extravaganza at the Buena Park Library

Children and children-at-heart are invited to an Origami Extravaganza at the Buena Park Library District. The event will be on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. (No sign-ups required.) Projects will be for ALL AGES ranging from easy to intermediate to challenging. Learn how to make origami jumping frogs, cranes, space rockets, peacocks—and more!! There will be lots of opportunity for practice before completing the final project using real origami paper. Come try your hand at paper folding!! ALL AGES welcome.

NoveList Plus -- a great resource at the Buena Park Library

"Scout’s honor, I actually do use NoveList to find new books if I’m looking for something in a particular genre. NoveList is an online resource that many public libraries subscribe to, and I’m glad mine does. [NOTE: So does the Buena Park Library] It is a-w-e-s-o-m-e. From the first time I tried NoveList years ago, it has always made me happy and gives me good recommendations. Tell it what authors you like, or a book you like, or just keywords you want to read about. Boom! Book recommendations. And I love using it with family members, non-library-world friends, or library users and showing them how to browse around. You can get lost in there for hours following thread after thread and finding more and more books to put on your “to read” list. The K-8 version is great for kids too. I actually found a long-lost-childhood-favorite-book using NoveList after every other method had failed–describing the book to long-time children’s librarians, searching by keywords on search engines and other book sites, no dice. Love it."

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Author Talk at the Buena Park Library

Meet Miles Corwin, former crime writer for the Los Angeles Times and author of nonfiction and fiction books. He will be discussing his works at the Buena Park Library on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 6:30 pm. He has written three non-fiction books and Kind of Blue, which is his first novel. Corwin lives locally and teaches at UC Irvine.

Author Talk at the Buena Park Library: Victoria Patterson

Victoria Patterson, author of the novel This Vacant Paradise, will be giving a talk at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 pm. The novel was selected as an Editors' Choice by The New York Times Book Review. Drift, her collection of interlinked short stories, was a finalist for the California Book Award and the 2009 Story Prize.

She lives with her family in Southern California and teaches through the UCLA Extension Writers' Program and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at UC Riverside.

Travel the World Through Books This Summer By Joining One of the Three Summer Reading Programs--for Children, Teens, and Adults

Children, ages 2-12, are invited to join the Summer Reading Club called “One World, Many Stories” for a summer filled with reading, prizes, entertainment, and fun. It will begin on June 18, 2011 with a Kick-Off Celebration from 2:00-4:00 pm that will include a petting barnyard, face painting, games, and more. On Thursday evenings all summer long, the Library will host special entertainment programs for families including magicians, jugglers, storytellers, and more.



Teens, grades 7-12, are invited to join the Summer Reading Club called “You Are Here” for a summer filled with reading, prizes, game tournaments and more. Sign-ups will begin on June 17, 2011 with a Kick-Off Celebration from 2:30-4:00 pm that will include Wii, board games, ice cream sundaes, and prizes. Teens will have a chance to participate in a variety of video and board game tournaments during the summer, as well as a special after-hours Amazing Race.



Adults, 18 and over, have their own Summer Reading Program called “Novel Destinations” where they have a chance to win one of many great end-of-summer themed gift assortments. The Adult Summer Reading Program begins on June 18, 2011.

The Summer Reading Programs are generously sponsored by the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library. All reading programs continue through August 13, 2011.

Southern California Author Carol Snow to Visit Buena Park Library

Carol Snow, author of several adult and teen books will be discussing her novels and the craft of writing at 2 pm in the Boardroom of the Buena Park Library on Saturday, May 21, 2011. Her most recent book Just Like Me, Only Better (2010), has been called “an immensely fun read that … makes Snow an author to watch” by Booklist magazine.

In 2006, Berkley/Penguin published her first novel, Been There, Done That, which Publisher's Weekly called “humorous, wise . . . romance with a bit of social commentary.” Since then, she has written three more books for adults, Getting Warmer (2007), Here Today, Gone to Maui (2009), and book Just Like Me, Only Better (2010). She has also written two young adult books for HarperCollins, Switch (2008), an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and Snap (2009). Foreign rights to Carol’s books have sold to publishers in Germany, Norway, and Romania. Her next novel for adults, What Came First, will be released in October 2011.

Carol Snow grew up in New Jersey. She holds an A.B. in psychology from Brown University and an M.A.T. in English from Boston College. Carol now lives in Fullerton, California, with her husband and their two children.

Celebrate National Library Week and "Create your own story" @ the Buena Park Library, April 10-16, 2011

The Buena Park Library District is celebrating National Library Week by inviting members of the community to “Tell Your Story” on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Beginning at 2 pm, the Toastmasters of Buena Park and interested members of the community will take to the stage and share their family’s journey to America. This is one of several planned Buena Park Reads Together events at the Buena Park Library, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., Buena Park, CA.

Libraries are places for new beginnings. Whether you are getting your first library card, learning new computer skills or planning a trip, the library is the place where your story begins. This National Library Week, join our nation’s libraries and librarians and “Create your own story @ your library.”

The Buena Park Library has many resources for anyone looking to start the next chapter in their life’s story, searching for a new job, needing help with their homework, and, of course, books to expand the horizons of your dreams. Best of all, it’s all free at your library!

Author Talk and Book Signing by Jeri Westerson at the Buena Park Library

Jeri Westerson, author of the “Crispin Guest” medieval noir mystery series, will be discussing her novels and her love of medieval history at the Buena Park Library on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 6:30 pm.

The character in her books is Crispin Guest, a disgraced knight turned private investigator, who solves crimes on the mean streets of fourteenth century London. He was created to be a conceptual marriage between medieval mystery and hard-boiled detective fiction. The Boston Globe called her detective, “A medieval Sam Spade, a tough guy who operates according to his own moral compass…. [her books] are pure fun.”

Westerson is on the board of directors for the Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America and is president of the Orange County chapter of Sisters in Crime. Before becoming a novelist she worked in a bevy of careers, including graphic artist, theology teacher, tasting host and tour guide for a winery, and a newspaper reporter. She currently lives in Southern California and is married to a commercial photographer. She also shares her home with two cats, a tortoise, and the occasional tarantula.

The titles of her books are: Veil of Lies, Serpent in the Thorns, and The Demon’s Parchment. Autographed copies of these titles will be available to purchase at the event. The fourth Crispin Guest mystery, Troubled Bones, will be released in October 2011.

E-Recycling Event to Benefit Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District will host an Electronic Recycling Fundraising Event on Saturday, March 26th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Library parking lot at 7150 La Palma Ave, Buena Park. You do not need to be a resident of Buena Park to participate.

This e-recycling event sponsored by Global e-Recyclers will provide an opportunity for citizens to properly dispose of their no longer needed electronics while at the same time help fund Library programs.

You may drop off a number of electronic items at the event, such as CRT Monitors, TVs, Cell Phones, Fax Machines, Printers, VCRs, Copiers, Toner, Monitors, Hard Drives, Servers, Telephones, Main Frames, Keyboards/Mice, Laptops, power supplies and other similar electronics. (No batteries and household or kitchen appliances will be accepted)

Volunteers will be available at Saturday’s event to help remove items from citizens’ vehicles. The “drive-through” feature will further make disposing of these items very convenient to participants.

Consumer Workshop on Surviving Unemployment at the Buena Park Library

On Saturday, March 19, 2011 the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County will present a workshop at the Buena Park Library on Surviving Unemployment. The workshop will be presented at 10:30 am to 11:30 am in English and will be followed by a Spanish version from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. The workshop will discuss how to reduce expenses, how to address the financial challenges that come with unemployment, and how to find new sources of income.

These classes are free and open to the public. No registration required.

The Consumer Credit Counseling Service, located in Santa Ana, is the nation's oldest and largest credit counseling organization and is a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

Special Performance by the Kennedy High School Jazz Band at the Buena Park Library District

Join us on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 6:30 pm for a special performance by La Palma’s Kennedy High School Jazz Band. The band members are a very talented group of students who have performed across the Southland. Their concert will feature songs from such jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Carter. Join us at the Library for this very musical and entertaining evening.

The music director of the group is Joshua Parsons who is a Southern California native. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and a Master of Arts in Education from Biola University. Parson’s primary instrument is the euphonium, a tenor voiced brass instrument, but he also plays the trombone and tinkers on the guitar.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Buena Park Library Celebrates Community's Diversity in "Buena Park Reads Together"

The Buena Park Library District is proud to announce the selections for the inaugural Buena Park Reads Together program. This month-long program will feature books written around the theme “The Immigrant Experience.”

For adults, The Namesake by award-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri has been selected. Teens will enjoy the award-winning A Step from Heaven by Korean author An Na, while tweens (ages 9 -12) can enjoy the award-winning Esperanza Rising by Southern California author Pam Muñoz Ryan. The children’s selection is We All Have a Heritage by Sandy L. Holman.

The goal of Buena Park Reads Together is to embrace the diversity in the community through shared readings, discussions, food and fun. The Library, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, will kickoff Buena Park Reads Together on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at 2 pm with food, poetry, storytelling, Readers Theater and much more.

“Buena Park is a very diverse community with many different cultures being represented,” said Patti Hanley, Library Director, “and we wanted to present something that people of all ages, cultures and ethnic backgrounds can come together and explore.”

Several special events focused around these books are planned throughout April. Activities will include book discussions, book-to-film viewing and discussion, and special programs for children.
