Tax Forms at the Buena Park Library

The IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board have provided us with supplies of frequently used individual tax forms for free distribution to the public.

You can download and print copies of other forms which are not supplied to libraries for 15 cents per page. Bring your library card to use one of the computers. You may also order free tax forms to be mailed to your home by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-3676 and the California Franchise Tax Board at 1-800-338-0505.

NOTE: Because the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 wasn’t signed until recently, some forms and instructions have been delayed and probably won’t arrive until late January or early February. Those affected that are of note are the 1040 and 1040A Instructions.

The staff at the Buena Park Library District cannot help with tax advice. Please consult a tax professional.

Linking Libraries to Help Haiti

The Buena Park Library has teamed up with other libraries in Orange County to raise money for a Haitian community library destroyed in last year's earthquake. The fundraising project "Linking Libraries to Help Haiti" will begin on Wednesday, January 12, 2011; – exactly one year after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated the country.

Library patrons can donate 25 cents to write their name on a fabric link that will help form a chain of support. Links can be purchased at the Library’s Check-Out desk through February 9, 2011. At the end of the four-week program, chains from each of the participating libraries in the county will be connected. The chain of support and the money will be sent to FOKAL, the American Library Association's organization for Haitian library aid. The money has been designated to Centre Culturel Pyepoudre, a community library in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince.

Find Out How to "Stop the Clutter" at a Program at the Buena Park Library

Do you have too much stuff? Do you want to know how to stop the clutter? Join us on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 6:30 pm to hear Penny Lambright of Clutter Cleaners, Inc. speak on living a clutter free life. If you are never sure what to keep, or what to throw out, or spend too much time looking for lost items – then this is the program for you. As a organizer and “clutterologist”, Penny will provide many hints on how to stop those packrat habits.

In 2000, Penny Lambright started Clutter Cleaners, after leaving the comforts of corporate America. She is a long time resident of Orange County and lives in the home where she grew up. She has been featured on Dateline, NBC and in the Orange County Register. She is a member of the Orange County Task Force on Hoarding and The National Association of Professional Organizers.

The program is free and open to the public.

Meet Edgar Allan Poe at the Buena Park Library District

Duffy Hudson, an acclaimed actor, director, and filmmaker will perform his one-man play, In the Shadow of the Raven: The Life and Works of Edgar Allan Poe in the Downstairs Community Room at the Buena Park Library on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 6:30 pm. You will think that you have met Mr. Poe himself after spending the evening in the presence of Broadway and film veteran Duffy Hudson, who brings his talent and fascination for Edgar Allan Poe to life in his unique one-man play.

The play, In the Shadow of the Raven, begins as Edgar Allan Poe rises from the scene of his mysterious death and continues as he pieces together the events of his life. Using a combination of biographical information and the dramatic interpretation of Poe’s literature, Annabel Lee, The Raven, and The Tell-Tale Heart, Hudson provides a unique, in-depth theatrical experience of the life and works of one of America’s best-known and enigmatic personalities.

Mr. Hudson is a co-owner of a film company, has many film acting credits, and has co-founded several theatre companies. He has also performed on Broadway and directed more than 300 theatrical pieces, working with Brooke Shields, Jessica Lange, Don Johnson, Tatum O’Neal, and Marlo Thomas. Duffy is also the author of the children’s book, The Boy Who Came From Heaven and another one-man show, The Relativity of Albert Einstein.

The program is made possible by funding from the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library. Admission is free and no tickets or reservations are necessary.

The Buena Park Library District is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, California. The Great California Shakeout at the Buena Park Library

On Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 10:21 a.m., the Buena Park Library District will be participating in the Great California Shakeout. At 10:21 a.m., there will be some "earthquake sounds" alerting us to the start of the "earthquake" -- this begins the "Drop, Cover, Hold" portion of the drill. At the end of the "earthquake", the evacuation of the building will begin. Once the evacuation has been completed and the building has been declared "safe", everyone can reenter.

Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover, and Hold on drill? As with anything, to react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down--or drops something on you.

If you are in the Library at the time of the drill you will be part of the largest earthquake drill ever!!
