Keeping Cool in Summer Dishcloth Exchange at the Buena Park Library District

The In Stitches Knitting & Crocheting Group at the Buena Park Library District will be having a "Keeping Cool in Summer Dishcloth Exchange". Members of the group will be knitting or crocheting dishcloths or washcloths over the summer and then exchanging them with other members at our September meeting.

The In Stitches group is open to anyone interested in knitting or crocheting. Beginning instruction is available. Teens are also welcome to the group for this special summer event.

Yarn is being provided for the dishcloths & washcloths through a generous donation from the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library. The yarn is available to pick up at the next 2 meetings on July 8, 2010 or August 12, 2010 and then the dishcloths will be exchanged at our September 9, 2010 meeting.

Summer Reading Clubs for All Ages at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will be hosting three Summer Reading Programs for children, teens, and adults this summer.

Children, ages 2-12, are invited to Make a Splash...Read by joining the Summer reading club for a summer filled with reading, prizes, entertainment, and fun. The Children's Summer Reading Club begins June 19th with a kick-off celebration from 2:00-4:00 pm that will include a petting zoo, face painting, games, and more. On Thursday evenings all summer long, the Library will host special entertainment programs for families including magicians, jugglers, storytellers, and more.


Teens, grades 7-12, can Make Waves--READ for a summer of reading, prizes, game tournaments and more. Sign-ups for the Teen Summer Reading Club begin on June 18, 2010 with a kick-off celebration from 2:30-4:00 pm that will include Wii and board games, food and prizes. Teens will have a chance to participate in a variety of video and board game tournaments during the summer, as well as, a special after-hours Amazing Race on August 14th.



Adults, 18 and over, have their own summer reading program, Water Your Mind--READ, where they have a chance to win one of many great end-of-summer gift baskets. The Adult Summer Reading Program begins on June 19th.

Buena Park Library District Offers Free Bilingual Spanish Internet Classes

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave. in Buena Park, will be offering a bilingual Spanish Introduction to the Internet class (Introducción a la Red) on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 9 am to 10:30 am in the Library’s Boardroom. The class will be repeated on June 12, 2010. This class will cover the basics of the Internet. Attendees should have basic mouse and keyboard skills. Free Practice SAT at the Buena Park Library for High School Students

Kaplan is sponsoring a free practice SAT at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, May 22nd from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. High School age students will have the opportunity to take a full-length SAT test under realistic testing conditions without affecting their college record. Registration is required for this event. Students can register in person at the Information and Reference desk at the Library, by calling 714-826-4100 ext. 125, or online at kaptest.com/practicetest. Participating students need to bring a calculator and two #2 pencils to the practice test.

Buena Park Library Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

On Saturday, May 15th from 2:30 to 4:00 pm, the Buena Park Library will be a celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. This special celebration for children and their grown-ups will feature Asian folktales and the Hiya Papaya dance group performing Hawaiian and Tahitian dances. After the entertainment we will be having an opportunity drawing for four Knott’s Berry Farm tickets.

There will then be crafts for the whole family. Children are invited to make a Japanese carp kite and a Chinese lantern. Teens and adults will be learning how to make origami cranes. In keeping with this special celebration we will be serving Asian inspired refreshments.

All refreshments and craft supplies were purchased with the generous support of the Buena Park Library’s Volunteer Guild. Also, a special thank you to Knott’s Berry Farm for their donation of the tickets.

Day of the Child, Day of the Book Celebration at Buena Park Library

Gustavo Arellano Will Talk About The History of Organic Foods in Orange County at the Buena Park Library

Gustavo Arellano, bestselling author and local columnist, will discuss the history of organic foods in Orange County. He will provide information on everything agricultural: from orange groves to peppers to the new restaurants to eat at. This program will be at the Buena Park Library District on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 2:00 pm.

Gustavo Arellano is a staff writer with OC Weekly, an alternative newspaper in Orange County, California, and a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Op/Ed pages. He is a familiar presence in Southern California radio as a frequent guest on liberal and conservative talk shows, where he discusses local and national issues.

Copies of his books Ask A Mexican and Orange County: A Personal History will be available for sale. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this program.

Halo 3 Tournament for Teens at the Buena Park Library

On Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Buena Park Library's auditorium there will be a Halo 3 Tournament for teens. It will be a team competition using a system link with multiple X-Box systems. A prize will be awarded to the winning team.

The Buena Park Library District will have a Special Reading Program for children ages 5-12 to celebrate Turn-off the TV Month. The reading program will begin April 1st and will continue until April 30th. The Turn-off the TV Reading Program stresses the importance of reading and is encouraging all children to turn off the TV and read. Dean Dixon will talk about the Hidden Buena Park at the Buena Park Library

Dean Dixon, curator of the Buena Park Historical Society, will present an insider's view of Buena Park history through real stories. His talk will be accompanied by a slide presentation. Dixon has been involved in historic preservation since the 1970s and will share his "warts and all" approach to local history. He believes in "giving our past a future" -- stop by and find out about the hidden Buena Park. The program will be on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Library Board Room.

The Buena Park Library District will be offering a bilingual beginning computer class (computación para principiantes) on Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 9 am to 10:30 am in the Library’s Boardroom. The class will be repeated on March 27 and April 3, 2010. This class is designed for those who have little or no experience with computers. Attendees will learn basic mouse and keyboard skills. Fan Exhibit Opens at the Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District hosts an exhibit of hand-held fans from the collection of Tracy Winkler. The hand fans have been collected from around the world and cover a time period from the 1850’s to the present day. The display is located in the Library lobby and runs now through March 31, 2010. The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. The Buena Park Library is open Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The exhibition includes a wide variety of fans from Asia, Spain, Europe and the Americas. On display are examples of fixed, folding, cockade and brise fans. Fans can be made of a wide variety of materials besides the more common wood and paper. Materials include feathers, fabric, lace, plastic, shell and bone. Ms. Winkler, a long-time Cerritos resident, was encouraged by an aunt to start a hobby and has been collecting fans since the age of nine. Ms. Winkler is a member of FANA (Fan Association of North America) and FCI (Fan Circle International), organizations dedicated to promoting, exhibiting, conserving, and educating the public about fans.

Fans have been used for thousands of years. Folding fans were invented in Japan over 1500 years ago. Dutch and Portuguese traders brought these fans to Europe during the 1500’s. From the 1600’s to the early 1900’s, fans were an important fashion accessory. Through the years, fans have been used as a token of love, as an advertising medium, as a signal across battlefields, as well as a cooling device.

Get Down & Dirty at the Buena Park Library

Two experts from the Fullerton arboretum will discuss different green gardening topics during a program at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm.

Jonathan Davis is a biologist/ethnobotanist at the Fullerton Arboretum and cares for the Arboretum's rare fruit collection. He has also developed an 11,000 square foot organic vegetable garden. He will present a talk called Garden Alchemy: How to Turn Your Turf Into Organic Vegetables.

Chris Barnhill is the living collections curator at The Arboretum. His presentation will be on Drought Tolerant Gardening.

Join us to find out how to make your garden "green" -- just in time for spring. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this program.

Recyclable Crafts for Teens at the Buena Park Library

Teens can Go Green at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 2:00--4:00 p.m. and participate in the Recyclable Craft Workshop. Teens will learn to make fashionable jewelry by first creating handmade paper beads out of old magazines. Beads will be used to create bracelets. Teens can also make a useful wallet out of duct tape. All supplies needed for the workshop will be available at the Library.

Paper Flower Making class at the Buena Park Library

Handmade crepe paper flowers are elegant, delicate and easy to make. Join instructor Rosa Armendariz to learn the basics of paper flower making from start to finish. Instruction will be given on making five different styles of flowers so that you will finish with a completed bouquet. This program will be for older teens and adults. This craft program will be held at the Buena Park Library District on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

Christiane Salts, Local Author, Will Give a Presentation at the Buena Park Library

Local author, Christiane Salts, will be giving an author talk at the Buena Park Library on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the 2nd floor Board Room. She is the author of a book on a Buena Park icon, Mrs. Knott. Her book is an entertaining and informative biography called Cordelia Knott: Pioneering Business Woman. The book tells the story of Cordelia and how she developed a world-class food business and helped her family not only survive, but thrive during the worst of times.

Mrs. Salts will be talking about her book and also about how she came to write and publish it. She will be an inspiration to budding authors when she talks about why she thinks that everyone should not be shy about writing down their memoirs for their children and grandchildren to enjoy. Her talk called “Capturing History – How I Came to Write the Biography of an Unsung Buena Park Heroine: Cordelia Knott” will be enjoyable to Buena Park history buffs and those wanting to write their own book.

Tax Forms Available at the Buena Park Library (or online)

Did you know that you can get all your tax forms and publications online? If you need federal forms and publications they can be found at the IRS website. If you need California state forms and publications they can be found at the Franchise Tax Board website.

You can also find them at the Buena Park Library District from now until the end of April. All basic forms and instructions are free, including the IRS 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ, and some of the most popular schedules. California booklets, which include forms and instructions, are also free of charge. Taxpayers who need specialized forms can seek help at the Library's reference desk, where documents can be printed for 15 cents per page.

Visitors will find tax forms in the reference area on the first floor of the Library at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park. Library staff members will be happy to help with finding forms, but they cannot give tax advice or instructions on completing them.

Learning a new language is free and easy at the Buena Park Library

[Buena Park, CA] – The Buena Park Library has recently added Mango Languages, a language-learning system, to its online information resources for Library patrons. With Mango Languages, Library users now have access to 22 Mango Basic language courses and 14 ESL courses at their fingertips just by logging in to the Library’s website at www.buenaparklibrary.org –all they need is a Buena Park library card.

“We are very excited to offer this new online language-learning system for free to our community,” said Louise Mazerov, Library Director. “Many library users are interested in learning a new language—whether it is for work, travel, or for personal enrichment, and the Library is here to help them achieve their goals.”

The 22 Mango Basic language courses include Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Latin America), Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. The 14 ESL courses are for native speakers of Spanish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, French, German, Italian, Vietnamese, Russian, Arabic, Greek, Japanese, Polish, and Portuguese.

Buena Park Library District Celebrates Cordelia Knott's 120th Birthday

On Saturday, January 23rd at 3:00 p.m. there will be a special storytime at the Buena Park Library celebrating the life of Cordelia Knott. This special storytime will feature Christiane Salts, author of Cordelia Knott: Pioneering Business Woman. Mrs. Salts will be performing the life story of Mrs. Knott in a way that children can fully appreciate the profound influence Mrs. Knott has had on Buena Park.

In celebration of Mrs. Knott's 120th birthday we will be serving birthday cake and punch. There will also be a drawing for a door prize for adults and 2 prizes will be awarded to children who are the winners of the Mrs. Knott coloring contest. Refreshments and prizes are being supplied by Knott's Berry Farm and the Salts family.

Children ages 2 through 12 may participate in the coloring contest by picking up a coloring sheet in the children's room of the Buena Park Library. Coloring sheets must be turned in to the Library before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22nd.

The next meeting of "In Stitches" will be on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 2-4 pm in the 2nd floor Board Room at the Buena Park Library.

Bring your knit or crochet project to work on and get inspired by projects from other group members. Please feel free to work on your charity project or your personal project. The group has made items for the following charities: Knott Avenue Care Center in Buena Park, items for Buena Park residents distributed by the volunteer group Citizens Assisting Police (CAP), Newborns in Need, and Project Linus. Every Friday in January there will be an opportunity to bowl a frame or two using Wii Bowling. Join others for some fun and a little exercise. The lanes will be open at 10 am on the following Fridays: January 8th, January 15th, January 22nd, and January 29th in the 2nd floor Boardroom.

Wii is a video console from Nintendo and Wii Bowling is a virtual bowling experience. It can be approached with all the gusto of being on a real alley or you can sit down and just swing your arm to "throw the ball". It is an ideal game for all skill levels.

Read-to-Me Reading Program at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District's Read-to-Me Reading Program will begin January 2nd and will continue until February 6th, 2010. The Read-to-Me Reading Program, for children through age 5, stresses the importance of reading to young children. Parents who read 25 picture books to their child will be entered into a drawing and may win four Knott's Berry Farm tickets. All children who complete the program may choose a prize from the reading prize box.

Buena Park Library Offers Free Beginning Computer Class

The Buena Park Library District will be offering their "Beginning Computer Class" on the following dates:

• Saturday, January 9, 2010
• Saturday, February 20, 2010

The class will be from 9 am to 10:30 am in the Library's Boardroom.

The class is designed for those who have little or no experience with computers. Attendees will learn basic mouse and keyboard skills.

The Orange County DREAM team to Present "Access to Higher Education" at the Buena Park Library

The Orange County DREAM Team (OCDT) will present "Access to Higher Education" at 2pm on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Buena Park Library, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., in Buena Park. The OC DREAM Team will discuss AB 540, which allows undocumented students of all nationalities (that meet specific requirements) to pay in-state tuition fees if they wish to attend California's public community colleges and universities. They will also provide information on the DREAM ACT.
This program is aimed at helping students complete high school and prepare for college or the workforce. It is made possible through a generous AT&T Foundation grant.


About the Orange County DREAM Team (OCDT)
The Orange County Dream Team (OCDT) was born out of a community's profound need to help its talented undocumented youth obtain access to higher education. Established in 2004, the OCDT began with a small but diverse group of high school, college and university students united under a common goal of passing the DREAM and Student Adjustment Acts.
At present time, the OCDT has grown into a dedicated Organization and has gained support from several community organizations such as Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, League of United Latin American Citizens, and Los Amigos de Orange County. We will continue to grow and strongly believe that all sectors of the Orange County Community will ultimately benefit from our accomplishments.

Christmas and New Year's Holiday Closure Dates

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Thursday and Friday, December 24th and 25th, in recognition of Christmas and will be resuming normal hours on Saturday, December 26th, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m. The Library will also be closed on Thursday and Friday, December 31st and January 1st for New Year's, reopening on Saturday, January 2nd for normal hours.

The Buena Park Library District Presents an Identity Theft Workshop

Learn what the thieves don't want you to know about identity theft. This program will be presented by Detectives Pimentel and Tewell, specialists in Economic Crimes at the Buena Park Police Department. The program will be on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 2pm to 3pm in the Downstairs Community Room at the Library.

Learn what to do if you ever find that your personal identifying information is being used by someone else for fraudulent or criminal purposes. Special Storytime at the Buena Park Library

On Wednesday, December 2nd from 6:30-7:45 PM, there will be a special storytime celebrating healthy eating. Principal Rene Jeffery of Pendleton Elementary will be reading stories at the Buena Park Library to encourage children to make healthy choices. This special storytime is the second of three in conjunction with the Buena Park School District promoting healthy lifestyles among children.

The Buena Park Library District Celebrates Year's End with a Display of Holiday Buttons

The Buena Park Library District hosts an exhibit of holiday-themed buttons courtesy of Buena Park resident Dennis Doran. The display is located in the Library lobby and runs now through December 29, 2009.

Mr. Doran has been wearing and collecting buttons and pins for over 20 years. He has displayed his button collection at college and public libraries throughout Orange County. His collection has grown to over 7,000 buttons. Almost all of Mr. Doran's buttons have been given to him by family, friends and colleagues. According to Mr. Doran, he would wear a different button to work everyday from November to the end of December. He has brought a small portion of his collection to share with the patrons of the Buena Park Library. Included in the display are some buttons from local businesses and amusement parks.

Catch some holiday cheer and enjoy a unique way to celebrate the festive season.

The Buena Park Library District Hosts a Mysterious Evening

Join other mystery lovers to listen to a panel of mystery authors discuss their books and how they have mastered the art of mystery writing. The panel will consist of three California authors: Teresa Burrell, Gayle Carline, and Jeff Sherratt. Please join us at the Buena Park Library District on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 6:00 pm in the 2nd Floor Board Room for a mysterious evening.

Teresa Burrell's debut novel is The Advocate, reviewed as a "wonderful twisty novel...not your normal court room story". It is a suspenseful drama that transports the reader into the heart of the juvenile court system and provides critical insight into the labyrinth of child welfare. Burrell maintained a private law practice in San Diego and focused on domestic, criminal, and civil cases. She has also enjoyed a satisfying career as a teacher.

Gayle Carline, a Placentia resident, will talk about her novel, Freezer Burn which has been reviewed as a must read for lovers of murder and mayhem. Carline writes a humor column for her local newspaper, the Placentia News-Times. She has been a software engineer, a dancer, and even a flying angel for the Crystal Cathedral's Glory of Christmas.

Jeff Sherratt will discuss this book The Brimstone Murders, which is the first of his Jimmy O'Brien Mystery series. His mystery story is said to be "filled to the brim with good fun and great action". Sherratt currently lives in Newport Beach and is a member of Sisters in Crime and the Mystery Writers of America.

After the discussion, the authors will be available to sign their books and answer questions. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win a door prize.

LIBRARY CLOSED NOV 14-18 TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW ON-LINE CATALOG

On November 19th, the Buena Park Library will “GO LIVE” with the Polaris Library System--its new online catalog. The Library will be closed November 14th thru November 18th to prepare for the new system. To assist you during the Library’s closing, the Library will be offering extended checkout prior to closing. Also, there will be no fines for any Library items returned between November 19th and November 28th.

“Dynix Classic,” our current Library computer system, was installed over 20 years ago, and although it has served the Library well for many years, our current vendor will not be supporting our system much longer. Therefore, we have been saving for the past few years knowing the day would come when we would have to move on to a new system.

The Polaris system uses current technologies and will improve the library’s entire scope of automated services, from ordering and tracking materials, to a more efficient check-in and check-out process. Best of all, it offers many new features for our customers including an enhanced library catalog with book cover images, book reviews, tables of contents and summaries, and a special children’s catalog. The Polaris System uses a standardized Web-based interface, and, as a result, customers will feel comfortable using the new system since it functions much like their computers at home or at work.

“You can do so much more with this new system, including keeping a list of books you’ve read and receiving pre-notification emails to remind you that your library materials will be due soon,” exclaimed Library Director Louise Mazerov. “We are confident the new system will improve your library experience.”

Knott’s Berry Farm Book Author Talk at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will be hosting a book talk featuring author Jay Jennings at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in the Downstairs Community Room of the Library.

Mr. Jennings will be speaking about his newly published book: Knott’s Berry Farm: the Early Years, which covers Walter Knott and the history of Knott’s from its humble beginnings as a roadside berry stand in the 1920s, to the 1970s, by which time it had grown into a world-class amusement park. Copies of the book will be available for sale at $21.99, and for signing by the author following his presentation.

Jay Jennings is a Los Angeles native who has spent many years visiting Knott’s Berry Farm and researching its history. He is also the owner of one of the largest collections of Knott’s souvenirs and memorabilia in the country. In addition, he is a writer, director, producer and music composer in the motion picture business.

Writer's Workshop: The Bumpy Road to Getting Published

The Buena Park Library is presenting a writer's workshop by local author and writing teacher, Maralys Wills. In this workshop called "The Bumpy Road to Getting Published" Wills will offer real-world suggestions for writing novels or non-fiction and turning them into salable works. This workshop is designed for readers who aspire to be published writers. She will suggest concrete writing tips, such as saving your strongest word for the end of the sentence and upgrading dialogue so even dull characters sound interesting. Maralys Wills, a college creative writing teacher for more than 20 years and author of 12 books shares the dos and don'ts of getting published.

The workshop will be on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6:30 pm. It will be held in the Downstairs Community Room of the Library.

Marayls Wills, an award-winning author, brings her varied and exciting lifestyle to the podium. An author of twelve books in a variety of genres, she was never content to contemplate life in the abstract: she was too buy living it. Even as her six children (five boys and a girl), were growing up, Wills began teacher novel-writing to adults, bestowing on them her energy, her enthusiasm and her passion for good writing.

Bestselling Author Gustavo Arellano (and the Los Hermanos Taco Truck) to Visit the Buena Park Library

Orange County native Gustavo Arellano is a nationally bestselling author, syndicated columnist, and the spiciest voice of the Mexican-American community. He is a staff writer with the OC Weekly in Orange County and a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Op/Ed pages.

During this program Arellano will be talking about his book, Ask A Mexican!. Books will be available for sale, and Arellano will be signing them after the discussion. Gustavo Arellano will be at the Library on Thursday October 8, 2009 at 6:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

Buena Park Library Celebrates National Piano Month

The Buena Park Library is offering an evening of music by local pianist, Paul Kosmala to celebrate National Piano Month. The program will be on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room at the Library. Kosmala will "tickle the ivories" of his keyboard and perform a variety of his most requested tunes. These will range from ragtime, blues, Gershwin, show tunes, classical, movie themes, etc.

Mr. Kosmala grew up in Buffalo, New York where he studied classical and popular music with several private teachers. He began performing professionally at age 16. Since moving to Southern California in 1979, he has performed with many local orchestras and bands, at many hotels, restaurants, countless private parties, and as a solo pianist on Sitmar Cruises. He is also an experienced piano teacher and has been inspiring students for over thirty years.

Mariachi 101 at the Library

The Buena Park Library will be hosting an author talk on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 6:00 pm. Gil Sperry, author of Mariachi for Gringos: Unlocking the Secrets of Mexico's Macho Music will be presenting his most entertaining talk called "Mariachi 101."

Have you ever wondered what the top 50 mariachi songs are? Or have you asked yourself last time you were at a Mexican restaurant -- do we stop eating and drinking when the mariachi arrive at our table? Sperry will entertain you with answers to these questions plus much more. He'll talk about the history of mariachi music, women and mariachi, the musicians and their instruments, and famous mariachi songs and their composers.

Gil Sperry is a modern-day renaissance man who delights in entertaining and informing audiences through both the spoken and the written word. His first book, Mariachi for Gringos, was originally released in 2006. His second book Soccer's Story & A Futbol Fable was released in 2009 and is currently being adapted into a screenplay by two veteran Hollywood screenwriters. His third book, The Hispanic Heritage of the Food We Eat, is now under construction.

Sperry lives with his wife in Baja where he enjoys the Mexican lifestyle, food, and music. He makes time to teach elementary school in Chula Vista, California and is an avid sports enthusiast, fisherman, and jazz aficionado. He is a graduate of Ohio's Kenyon College and also holds an M.A. in History from Stanford University.

This program is appropriate for the whole family and should be a very entertaining evening of all things mariachi. Refreshments will be provided and autographed copies of his book will be available for purchase.

The Buena Park Library District Says Farewell to Summer with a Seashell Display

"She sells seashells by the seashore" ... so goes the tongue twister. At the Buena Park Library District, Margaret Cooney presents an exhibit of shells collected by her late mother, Elizabeth M. Schofield, over the past 40 years. Friends, family and neighbors brought Mrs. Schofield shells from their travels. Currently on display in the library lobby, the exhibit will run through September 30, 2009.

Shells are the external skeleton of a soft-bodied animal known as a mollusk. Clams, snails, abalones are all mollusks. Mollusks live in the oceans and in fresh water, as well as on land. The shell is composed of calcium carbonate and other substances which are secreted by the mantle of the mollusk. The mantle is also responsible for the formation of pearls in oysters and mussels. Mollusks have been used as a source of food for thousands of years. Shells have been prized from ancient times. Shells have decorated Mesoamerican temples and Greek and Roman vases. They have also been used as a form of currency by Native Americans.

The Buena Park Library will Host a Writer's Workshop

The Buena Park Library is presenting a writer's workshop by local author and writing teacher, Barbara French. The workshop topic is "Seven Ways to Hook Your Reader." French says, "Whether you want to hook an agent, publisher, or book buyer, you need to know how." The workshop will be on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the 2nd Floor Board Room.

Barbara has taught creative writing for 17 years in Anaheim and Cypress for the North Orange County Community College District. Her novelized memoir, Someday Street, is an inspiring story of a family surmounting dire circumstances in the Great Depression with economizing, humor and life-affirming philosophies. Besides publishing a book, she has also published 28 articles, a newspaper column and has won short story and poetry prizes.

Buena Park Library to be Closed on Mondays Effective August 24th

At their meeting on August 11, 2009 the Buena Park Library District Board of Trustees made budget revisions based on the recent State budget which allows the transfer of 8% of library property tax revenue to the State. In order to save the amount needed, the Board voted to close the Library on Mondays beginning August 24th and to pass on additional retirement costs to the employees. These reductions will be in addition to the reductions made in January 2009 and July 2009, including a 50% reduction in the materials budget and a reduction in hours of part time employees.

"While the earlier decisions were made in order to not reduce hours or services, that is no longer possible. The Library Board deeply regrets the impact of these decisions on the community," commented Board President Bob Niccum. "The Library continues to be used more than ever during these bad economic times, but like everyone else, the Library has to live within its means."

The Buena Park Library Presents a Talk on Backpack Safety

It is time to start thinking about back to school supplies and backpacks to carry all those supplies. Did you know that using a backpack improperly can cause long-term back problems? Do you have more questions about backpack safety and correct posture for kids? Dr. Stephen Smith will be giving a short talk at the Library on just this. It will also include correct posture for computer use, cell phone use and video gaming posture. His presentation at the Library will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 7:00 pm and is appropriate for both kids and adults.

Dr. Smith has run a successful chiropractic practice in Buena Park since 1981. He has been active in his profession having served on the Board of Directors of the California Chiropractic IPA and on the board of Regents of The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. Locally, Dr. Smith has twice served as president of the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park. Before becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Smith was a professional musician and stand-up comedian, which comes through in his presentations.

Change in Meeting Date for August 2009 Library Board of Trustees Meeting

The August meeting of the Buena Park Library District Board of Trustees has been rescheduled to ensure all members are present to discuss changes to the 2009/2010 budget due to the recent passage of the State budget allowing the State to borrow 8% of the District's property tax revenue. This will require additional cuts to the Library's budget in addition to the 10% reduction already in the budget. This Board meeting will take place at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, in the Board Room located on the second floor of the Library. All Board meetings are open to the public.

American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Library

The Buena Park Library District is having an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2009 in the downstairs community room.

Cracking the Case Using Handwriting Analysis

On Saturday, August 8th, 2009 graphologist Paula Sassi will present a program on handwriting analysis at the Buena Park Library District. This program will appeal to teens and adults. Please join us in the Downstairs Meeting Room at 2:00 pm for an afternoon of mystery solving through handwriting.

Uncover the secrets revealed in the strokes of handwriting to help solve real and fictional mysteries. Handwriting analysis can be a useful tool in discovering the honesty or dishonesty of the wrtier. Hundreds of indicators found in the strokes of writing can reveal whether the writer has a tendency to lie, cheat, steal or worse. Learn some basic dishonesty indicators and help solve interesting cases using handwriting analysis.

Paper Flower Making Class at the Buena Park Library

A paper flower making class will be held at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

Handmade crepe paper flowers are elegant, delicate and easy to make. Join instructor Rosa Armendariz to learn the basics of paper flower making from start to finish. Instruction will be given on making five different styles of flowers so that you will leave with a completed bouquet.

This program will be of interest for teens through adults. All adult attendees will receive an entry drawing slip for a chance to win one of several gift baskets being given as prizes at the end of the Adult Summer Reading Program.

Harp & Flute Music Program at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a Harp & Flute Music Program on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

The program features Peggy Skomal playing Concert and Celtic Harp, and Susan Craig Winsberg playing a variety of flutes, recorders and pennywhistles. Together they perform Celtic, Classical and Folk music with contrasting moods and melodies. Explanations and stories about the instruments and music are presented in an educational and entertaining manner for all age groups.

One lucky adult attendee will receive a deli restaurant coupon, and all adult attendees will receive an entry drawing slip for a chance to win one of several gift baskets being given as prizes at the end of the Buena Park Library's Adult Summer Reading Program.

In Stitches: A Knitting and Crocheting Group

The next meeting of In Stitches will be on Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 2-4 pm in the 2nd floor Board Room at the Buena Park Library District.

Please join us as we knit or crochet items for charity. The group has already made afghans and lap robes to give to some of the residents of the Knott Avenue Care Center in Buena Park. They have also been knitting and crocheting blankets and baby items for Project Linus and Newborns in Need.

Wii Bowling at the Library (for Adults)

The Wii Bowling Alley at the Buena Park Library will reopen on Monday, July 13th for 4 weeks of virtual bowling fun. The lanes in the 2nd floor Board Room will be open from 2:00-3:00 pm for all adults to try their hand at virtual bowling.

Independence Day Closure

The Buena Park Library District will be closed Friday and Saturday, July 3rd and 4th, 2009, in recognition of the Independence Day holiday, resuming normal hours Monday, July 6, 2009, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m.

Summer Reading Clubs for All Ages at the Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District will be hosting three Summer Reading Programs for children, teens, and adults this summer. Children, ages 2 to 12, are invited to join the Home Run Readers Summer Reading Club for a summer filled with reading, prizes, entertainment, and fun. Teens can participate in the Grand-Slam--Summer Reading Club, for a summer of reading, prizes, game tournaments and more. Adults, 18 and over, have their own summer reading program, Slide into Summer Reading, where they have a chance to win one of many great thematic gift baskets.

Sign-ups for the Teen Summer Reading Club begin June 19th with a kick-off celebration from 2:00-4:00 p.m. that will include Wii games such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Guitar Hero, as well as, caricaturist Dave Boatman and food.

The Children's and Adult Summer Reading Clubs begin June 20th with a kick-off celebration for the children from 2:00-4:00 p.m. that will include a petting zoo, balloon animals, face painting, games, and more. On Monday evenings all summer long, the Library will host special entertainment programs for families including magicians, jugglers, storytellers, and more.

Teens will have a chance to participate in a variety of video and board game tournaments, as well as, a special after-hours Amazing Race on August 15th.

Adults will be able to enjoy an author talk by Gustavo Arellano in June, a harp and flute concert in July, and learn how handwriting is used in Cracking the Case with graphologist Paula Sassi in August. All reading clubs continue through August 22nd, 2009.

Gustavo Arellano to Speak at the Buena Park Library

Popular author and columnist, Gustavo Arellano, will be speaking on Thursday, June 25, 2009 from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Downstairs Meeting Room at the Buena Park Library District.

Arellano is an Orange County native, a nationally bestselling author, syndicated columnist, and voice of the Mexican-American community. He is a staff writer with the OC Weekly and a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Op/Ed pages.

His writing credits include: a nationally syndicated column, ¡Ask a Mexican!, author of two books, ¡Ask a Mexican!, based on the writings in his column, and Orange County: A Personal History, part personal narrative, part cultural history.

During this program, Gustavo Arellano will be talking about his books. Books will be available for sale and Arellano will be signing them after the discussion.

Injury Prevention Seminar at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a program entitled: Injury Prevention Seminar at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in the 2nd floor Library Board Room. This program, emphasizing work injury prevention, covers all aspects of work that require standing, lifting, bending, and sitting. The information presented will be particularly helpful for heavy labor jobs. Home care, including sleep positioning, stretching, and strengthening exercises, will also be covered.

The program will be presented by Dr. Steve Smith. Dr. Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and has been a post graduate extension faculty member of two chiropractic colleges, training extern doctors.

Developing an Unforgettable Image : A Program for Women at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a program entitled: Developing an Unforgettable Image: A Program for Women, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in the 2nd floor Library Board Room. During the program, you will learn to reinvent your image and wardrobe through the use of accessories and make-up, keeping you in line with the latest trends and styles.

In today's market you must make a statement in order to excel, and it starts with developing your image. You have 30 seconds to make a first impression. Remember, it's all about the WOW factor!!! If you are interested in entering or re-entering the work force or working your way up the corporate ladder, this program is for you.

Holiday Closure -- Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th, 2009

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Monday, May 25th, 2009 in observation of the Memorial Day holiday. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, May 26th.

Celebrate Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) at the Buena Park Library

Join the Buena Park Library as it celebrates Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) during the week of April 27 through May 2nd. Dia is a nationwide celebration of children, families and reading held annually, and this year the library will have 3 special events for children and their families. Enjoy the Magic of Rafael on Monday, April 27th at 6:30 pm. Storyteller Tio Alec and his pink gorilla will take you on a treasure hunt on Thursday, April 30th at 7 pm. There will be a Children's Fun Fiesta with games, prizes and more on Saturday, May 2nd from 2 pm to 4 pm. Children will also be able to create their own "Book about Me" during the Fiesta.

Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) is an enhancement of Children's Day, which began in 1925. Children's Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. Dia brings families together and emphasizes the importance of literacy for every child regardless of linguistic or cultural background. Hundreds of libraries, schools and communities throughout the country will host celebrations and programs that honor multiculturalism and stress the importance of books and literacy.

Celebrate National Library Week at the Buena Park Library

Join us as we celebrate National Library Week at the Buena Park Library located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Western and Knott Aves. We will kick off the week by taking a "Journey through Grimm's Fairytales" at 6:30 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009. This performance will feature a dynamic combination of dance, theatre, story-telling, clown and puppets with an emphasis on the importance of literature and a celebration of National Library Week. This will be an all-ages show, especially geared towards children 3 to 14 years old.

"Worlds Connect" at the Buena Park Library as we celebrate National Library Week starting Sunday, April 12 through Saturday, April 18, 2009. Buena Park Library Celebrates its 90th Birthday during National Library Week

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Buena Park Library District located at 7150 La Palma Ave. To help celebrate this momentous occasion, the Library is holding an Open House on Saturday, April 18th from 10 AM to 2 PM. The fun begins with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 10 AM followed by storytelling, refreshments and multicultural performances. The multicultural performances will include Ballet Folkorico by students in Project SAY, Hula/Tahitian dancing by Hiya Papaya Productions, Indian Bollywood dancing, and a Korean kayakum performance by Esther Lee. Please join us as we celebrate our 90th Birthday!

Adults are invited to come to the Buena Park Library to participate in our weekly Wii bowling games on Monday mornings from April 6 through May 11, 2009. The downstairs community room will be turned into a bowling alley from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

The Buena Park Library District will be teaching a series of four (4) Spanish computer classes on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm during the month of April in the Library's Boardroom. The topics are:
