September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Buena Park Library District wants to make sure that you and your child carry the most valuable card of all – a library card.

In honor of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, some local businesses are offering discounts and other perks if you show your library card during the month of September. “This is a great way to promote library card sign-up month and give local businesses an opportunity to partner with us to show their support for reading,” said Library Director, Patti Hanley. There’s a lot happening at the Buena Park Library for everyone in our community, and the best part is that in these tough economic times, it’s all free with a library card. The Buena Park Library has books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks, computers, and a variety of helpful, informative databases that can be accessed using your Buena Park Library card. The Library also offers several free programs for all ages to stimulate the joy of reading. Librarians are available to help recommend material suitable for various ages and interests.

Gardening: A Family Affair at the Buena Park Library

Did you know that Fall is the best time to plant a garden in Southern California? Two of our local gardeners, Sherry Jones & Rosalyn Strickler, are going to show you the many fun ways to create a garden in any space. Rosalyn said that some of the best gardens she has seen have been planted in children's wading pools. They will talk about how to create butterfly, pizza, salsa and stir fry gardens. Or if you like the idea of having fresh tomatoes for the holidays -- they will show you how to make it happen. There will be many more great ideas, information, and fun!!!

Join us on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2:30 pm in the Downstairs Auditorium of the Buena Park Library District at 7150 La Palma Avenue.

This program is for ALL gardeners or want-to-be gardeners (young and old). Everyone will go home with a starter kit to plant their very own vegetable or flower in their garden. There will also be a drawing for a door prize. So, come one, come all, to find out fun ways to create your very own garden.

A Free Practice ACT/SAT to be Held At The Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., will be hosting a free practice ACT/SAT combo test on Saturday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This practice test is perfect for the student who is trying to decide whether he/she wants to take the ACT or the SAT test. This combo test includes a condensed version of both the SAT and ACT.

High School age students are welcome to participate. Registration is required for this event. Students can register in person at the Information/Reference desk at the Library or by calling 714-826-4100 ext.125. Participating students need to bring a calculator and two #2 pencils to the practice test.

For all participating students and their parents, there will be a combo test results and ACT & SAT Workshop on September 1st from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Any questions call the Library at 714-826-4100 ext.125 and ask for Phyllis.

Buena Park Library District Offers Free Bilingual Beginning Computer Classes

The Buena Park Library District will be offering a bilingual beginning computer class (computaciĆ³n para principiantes) on Saturday, September 11, 2010, from 10 am to 11:30 am in the Library’s Boardroom. This class is designed for those who have little or no experience with computers. Attendees will learn basic mouse and keyboard skills. Participants are asked to call the Information/Reference Desk at 714.826.4100 x125 to sign up since space is limited.

Healthy Body, Happy Heart and Power Brain Workshop at the Buena Park Library

Please join us for a free training clinic with Master Amy Ko of Dahn Yoga in Buena Park. She will teach ancient meditation techniques and healthy yoga postures that will help you deal with the modern stresses of society. This class is beneficial for all age groups, so bring the whole family!!

The workshop will be on Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm in the downstairs community room at the Library.

Some of the highlights of the class will be:
Water Up, Fire Down
This is the core principle for Dahn Yoga. It is the complete cycle of energy circulation and by repeating this cycle, life maintains its balance and continuity.

Ki Gong Exercises
These energy martial arts help practitioners completely rebalance their body. Practitioners of Ki Gong learn to keep a peaceful, confident mind even in the face of stress.

Brain Wave Vibration
This is the signature exercise of Dahn Yoga. It is a simple, easy-to-follow brain fitness and holistic healing method that helps bring your body and mind back into balance.

Energy Meditation
Serenity, clarity, and creativity are unleashed through this subtle free-form energy meditation.

There will be books about these techniques available for sale after the class. In addition, there will be a 20% discount off a one month membership at Dahn Yoga for those who sign up after the class.

Free Summer Concert at the Buena Park Library

Please join us as we present a free summer concert for all ages by talented local pianist, Paul Kosmala. The performance will be on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the 2nd floor Board Room.

Kosmala will be performing his most requested tunes on the keyboard. There will be everything from Gershwin to Broadway and he'll also take requests. He has been playing professionally since the age of 16 and is also an experienced piano teacher.

Every adult attending will get one free entry slip for a chance to win one of the end-of-summer gift baskets from the Adult Summer Reading Program and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a bucket of cool merchandise donated by Hooters of Costa Mesa. (The gift bucket includes: 2 T-shirts, a certificate for a VIP Wing Party, plus much more.)
