Adults are invited to come to the Buena Park Library to participate in our weekly Wii bowling games on Monday mornings from April 6 through May 11, 2009. The downstairs community room will be turned into a bowling alley from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
The Wii interactive video game is a fun and easy way to get some light exercise and socialize with friends. Wii bowling is easy to learn and the motions are quite similar to real bowling. Players stand or sit in front of a screen and manipulate a remote control to "throw a virtual ball." Join us for a little exercise and fun! ADULTS only -- no children please.

90th Anniversary Display at the Buena Park Library
The Buena Park Library celebrates 90 years of service with a display of photographs, artifacts, and newspaper clippings about the history of the library. The exhibit is on display in the library lobby now through April 28, 2009.
The early residents of Buena Park created a library in 1905 with donated books in a spare room of the old Lily Creamery. In 1919, the Buena Park Woman's Club sponsored a petition drive and election forming the Buena Park Library District. A library was built on the corner of what are now Beach Boulevard and Pinchot Court. The 18 x 22 foot building was stocked with 283 books. After several remodels, the facility proved inadequate for the growing community. Land was purchased and a new library constructed on La Palma Avenue in 1969.

- 1920's: Picture of Katherine Berkey (Librarian 1924-1946) and library accession books from the 1920's. Every book acquired by the Library was recorded in the accession book, including price, title, author, publisher, etc. Catalogue cards were created and filed in the card catalogue.

The Buena Park Library is hosting a Passport Fair on Saturday, March 28th, 2009 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm to provide passport information and accept U.S. passport applications. The Buena Park Library is joining the Department of State in celebrating "Passport Day in the USA", a national passport acceptance and outreach event.
Plan ahead and apply for your U.S. passport now! On June 1, 2009, the second phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will go into effect. At that time, U.S. citizens must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the U.S. government to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry.

The Buena Park Library Receives Grant for Multicultural Program "Telling Stories"
The Buena Park Library recently received a mini-grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation for a multicultural family program called "Telling Stories". Families with children of all ages will have the opportunity to tell their story through art. All materials are provided, but families can bring in pictures and other mementos to make their story more personal.
“Telling Stories” will begin at 2:30 pm on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at the Buena Park Library. Participants are encouraged to sign up as space is limited and should plan to attend the four Saturday sessions in March. This is a great way to bring parents and children together to teach them how to share their stories using art. Regardless of someone’s writing or English-speaking ability, they can use art to tell about their experiences. Each participant shares a story from his/her history and culture on a felt square. As the squares are sewn together, so are the lives of those who made them. “There will also be storytelling of folktales from different cultures so it’s a storytime and crafts for the WHOLE family,” according to Mary Ivelia, Childrens Specialist.
At the final class, the families all come together to sew the "Stories" to create a quilt or several mini-quilts that will be presented at the annual Childrens Art Festival in April 2009 at the Buena Park Recreation Center.

Buena Park Library Reduces Budget Without Reducing Service
On Tuesday, February 3, the Buena Park Library District Board of Trustees approved the last of a series of mid-year budget reductions. These reductions are necessary due to reduced revenues during the current economic crisis.
“We have concentrated on making adjustments that would not reduce the hours we are open or the services we provide,” stated Board President Bob Niccum. This included a decision by the Library Board to reduce employee benefits and to require that employees take four regularly scheduled holidays without pay in the next fiscal year as well as the remaining two holidays in this fiscal year (President’s Day and Memorial Day). These budget cutting decisions began with a special meeting of the Board on January 20.
“As the economy worsens the busier we get at the Library,” reports Library Director Louise Mazerov. “People need us more than ever as they cope with job losses and reduced income. The Library provides resources that can be used to update resumes, improve interview skills and identify potential employers. People also come in for books, CDs and DVDs for relaxation and entertainment. In addition the Library has programs for children and teens that are free.”
“The Board deeply regrets having to reduce pay and benefits for our employees, because they are the most valuable resource our library has,” Niccum added. “But we chose cuts that best balance service to our patrons and fairness to our staff.

The Buena Park Library Goes "Batty"

Blue Bat is one of three handmade, stuffed “book bats” created by Brian Lies, the author and illustrator of “Bats at the Library.” Blue Bat is traveling in his special “steamer trunk” with his own passport and a copy of the book. According to Lies, “Bats at the Library” and the “Bat to Basics” Tour is meant to remind people that “they can go ‘bat’ to the basics – simple, inexpensive entertainment, such as the joy of getting lost within the pages of a book.” The author has loved libraries and books since he was little, and when he travels, he rarely misses an opportunity to explore the local library. The author states, “Things are tough right now. The economy is in rough shape, and people are looking for cost-effective things to do with the family. What’s better than free? … Books, DVDs, magazines, newspapers. All free. The only thing you have to do is promise to bring stuff back.”
When he is not visiting storytimes, Blue Bat will be in his “Bat Cave” in the Childrens’ Room. Stop by and visit him. Creole Portraits by LeDOUX on Display at the Buena Park Library District

LeDOUX's career has spanned the fashion industry as a designer and a business owner. He has imparted his knowledge and experience in the fashion industry as a lecturer at fashion schools and colleges in the Los Angeles area. Mr. LeDOUX's interest in his Creole culture and genealogy has influenced the portraits presented in this exhibit.
There are many definitions of the term "Creole" and the meaning has changed through the centuries. It originally referred to anyone born in the French and Spanish colonies of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast of North America, regardless of race. Later, after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, it was used to differentiate between those native to Louisiana and the Anglo-American newcomers. Today, the term Creole often refers to a mixture of French or Spanish, African, and Native Indian culture. Creoles can be found in Haiti, Cuba, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. In the United States, the Creole community is concentrated in Louisiana. They developed a distinct identity and culture, especially in language, food, religious practices, and architecture (as seen in the French Quarter of New Orleans).

In Stitches -- A Knitting and Crocheting Group
The first meeting of our In Stitches group was held on January 8th, 2009 and we started working on our first charity project, which will be a WarmUpAmerica! afghan (made of 7" x 9" squares) to be given to a local Buena Park charitable group.
Our next meeting will be on February 12, 2009 (Thursday) from 2-4 PM in the Board Room on the 2nd floor of the Library.
If you can't make the meetings, but would still like to contribute to our project -- please stop by the reference desk to get the directions for crocheted or knitted squares. The patterns can also be found online at the WarmUpAmerica! site. We do have some donated yarn left that we can give out until it's gone. Or you can choose your own yarn. Currently the colors we are using are a dark blue, medium blue, and light blue (or any color that would complement that color scheme) of 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn.
Squares can be dropped off anytime to the reference desk or at our monthly meeting. The group is open to the idea of working on other charity projects in the future, some things that have been mentioned are preemie caps, chemo caps, knitting for the troops.... Please join us!

Christmas and New Year's Holiday Closure Dates

Job Interviewing and Resume Writing Skills Program on December 17, 2008
The Buena Park Library District will be hosting a Job Interviewing and Resume Writing Skills Workshop. This informative program will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the Buena Park Library’s 2nd floor Board Room, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, California.
Michelle Lawrence with American First Credit Union will conduct a program teaching job interviewing skills and resume writing techniques in one session. Mock interviews will be demonstrated with an emphasis on eye contact and making the experience feel like a real interview. Resume writing skills will also be demonstrated, with sample resumes and handouts provided.
This program is free of charge and the public is invited to attend. No reservations are necessary.

Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre presents a Family Program, December 16th
The Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre will present a Holiday Show for the whole family at the Buena Park Library on Tuesday, December 16th at 6:45 pm.Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre has created a unique style of vaudeville storytelling that brings out the humor and whimsey inherent in multi-cultural literature. The dynamic team of Lorrie Oshatz and Theresa Amy provide exciting performances that put a fresh spin on folk tales, fables and poetry from around the world. Many of your favorite stories will spring to life in a lively display of masks, props and costumes.

Volunteer Guild Bookstore Sale on December 13th
The Volunteer Guild Bookstore of the Buena Park Library is having their Holiday Members Only Double Discount+ Sale. On Saturday, December 13th, they will hold the Members Only Sale in the bookstore on the second floor of the library from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Tables full of donations will be on display for perusal and purchase. Come early for the best selection!
If you are not currently a member, you may renew or begin a new membership at the event to take advantage of the discount. All members will receive the double discount of 40% plus an extra 10% for a grand total of 50% off!!
