Special Treats at the Buena Park Library for Halloween!

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, will be having a special visit by award-winning author, Ms. Merrily Kutner, author of Zombie Nite Café, Z is for Zombie and Down on the Farm for our 2nd Annual Halloween Extravaganza, on Wednesday, October 31st, starting at 6:00 p.m. in our basement auditorium. Merrily will read her newest book, Zombie Nite Café, and if everyone won’t get too scared, she will also read Z is for Zombie! Merrily will be selling and signing Zombie Nite Café for $16.95 cash only. Interested parents, caregivers and grandparents might want to be ready to buy this delightful tale to read over and over again to your eager audience!

This is usually our family storytime event, too, so we are encouraging all the young participants to come in costume. As part of our festivities planned after Merrily’s presentation, we will have some fun games, and we will also have a costume parade around the Library. Merrily will also be in costume for our event. Parents, caregivers, and grandparents can dress up if they want. Watch out … some of the Library’s staff may be in costume as well!

Library Closure -- Veterans' Day

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Monday, November 12, 2007, in recognition of the Veterans' Day holiday, and will be resuming normal hours on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m.

Zeta (Jimmy) Dhanapanth's 1:18th scale model car collection would rival those full-size cars found in Jay Leno's garage. You can see part of Dhanapanth's collection on display at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. The exhibit is located in the Library lobby and runs now through the end of October 2007.

Dhanapanth began collecting model cars and motorcycles six to seven years ago with a model car from the TV show "The Munsters." Many companies manufacture die cast cars, but most of his collection is from Maisto, Hotwheel, and Yat-Ming. He now “has more models than space to store them!” On display in the Library are early Model T Ford's, 1950's classics like the Thunderbird, muscle cars from the seventies, choppers and Vespas, and even the Batmobile. The models are very detailed, with doors and hoods opening to reveal the engines and interiors that have been meticulously crafted.

Dhanapanth runs a non-profit tutoring service in Stanton whose aim is to provide affordable tutoring, especially to low income students. Stop by the Buena Park Library, take a cruise down memory lane with the variety of vehicles on display - you may see a car you fell in love with “back in the day.”

Southern California Science Book Author to Give an Author Talk Program at Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District will present Southern California science book author Cy Timony in an author talk program on Tuesday evening, October 16, 2007 from 6:00 – 7:45 p.m. The program will take place in the Buena Park Library's lower level auditorium, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, California.

Cy Timony is the author of several ingenious science books, including: Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things, and Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things. He has been creating useful high-and-low-tech inventions all his life. By reading comic books as a kid and studying scientific techniques, he bridged science and fiction to amaze his friends. His latest book, Sneakiest Uses for Everyday Things, will be published in October. Those attending the event will learn about energy fundamentals, conservation tips, and sneaky reuses of everyday things. Demonstrations will also be given on how ordinary objects can be used in extraordinary ways. Books will be available for purchase and autographing at $10.00 cash each during the program.

Dave Boatman’s Cartooning Class -- Saturday, October 13th

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, will be having a cartooning class for 5th through 12th graders on October 13th, 2007 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Dave will teach participants about cartooning and will present a step-by-step follow the instructor drawing period. Orange County Sisters in Crime -- Forensics and Fiction Workshop -- Tuesday, Oct 2, 2007

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, will host an Orange County Sisters in Crime workshop, Forensics and Fiction, on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 from 6:00-7:45 p.m. in the Library’s auditorium.

Dr. D.P. Lyle will be sharing clever, ingenious, and downright odd questions he has received as a story and technical consultant from crime writers. Books will be available for purchase and can be signed by the author. Refreshments will be served.

Manga Drawing Class for Teens -- Saturday, Sept 15th!

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, will be having a Manga Drawing Class on Saturday, September 15, 2007 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Library’s auditorium. Teens will learn manga drawing fundamentals in the class. The Library will provide all of the drawing supplies needed for the class.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Buena Park Library District wants to make sure that you and your child are among the two-thirds of Americans that carry the most valuable card of all – a library card.

In honor of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, some local businesses are offering discounts and other perks if you flash your library card during the month of September.

“It’s a great way to promote library card sign-up month and give local businesses an opportunity to partner with us and support reading,” said Library Director Louise Mazerov.

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Monday, September 3rd, 2007, in recognition of the Labor Day holiday. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, September 4th, 2007, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m.

The Buena Park Library District is having its third American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2007 in the downstairs auditorium. The Buena Park Library District is sponsoring a free financial awareness seminar presented by Buena Park Chamber of Commerce members Peter Chow and Sylvia Woodside, who represent a large dealer/broker in financial planning. The seminar, entitled, Active Money Management for an Active World, will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Buena Park Library’s 2nd floor Board Room, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, California.

Summer Reading Club Weekly Events -- August 6th through August 11th

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, has a number of events for children and teens this week.

On Monday, August 6th, the evening’s entertainment is Blues musician Brother Yusef. Through dancing, singing, and audience participation, children and adults will discover the many expressions of the Blues. The show begins at 7:00 p.m., so come by early for a choice spot!

On Tuesday, August 7th, there will be a Mystery movie for teens, ages 13-18, from 6:00-7:45 p.m. Call the Library for the title.

On Wednesday, August 8th, the Library's 4th annual talent show will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The talent show gives the children a chance to showcase their talent.

On Saturday, August 11th from 1:00-2:00 p.m., the Summer Reading Club will finish up with a Summer Reading Club Celebration. Colorful and Unique Button Display now through the end of August!

Button, button, who has the button? The Buena Park Library District has buttons galore! Currently on display are sports and geographical buttons. Appropriately themed for summer, these pins are just a small part of the over 7,000 buttons collected by Buena Park resident Dennis Doran. The exhibit is on display in the Library lobby and runs now through the end of August 2007. The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues.

Mr. Doran began collecting pin-back buttons during the 1970’s at an anti-Vietnam war rally. He has displayed his button collection at college and public libraries throughout Orange County for the past 20 years. His collection has grown to over 7,000 buttons which allows him to create themes for his displays. As a long-time Cypress College employee, most of the buttons have been given to him by colleagues and friends. He has even received buttons from people who have seen his exhibits! Stop by the Buena Park Library this summer and take a trip to faraway places through this amazing button collection.

On Monday, July 30th, the evening’s entertainment is juggler, David Cousins. His comedy juggling show consists of audience involvement, interaction and music. The show begins at 7:00 p.m., so come by early for a choice spot!

On Tuesday, July 31st, teens can team up to play Guesture, a game of split-second charades. The team to score the most points by acting-out words will win a prize. On Saturday, August 4th, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. there will be Monopoly® Tournament. Prizes will be awarded to winners.

Summer Reading Club Weekly Events -- July 23rd through July 27th

On Monday, July 23rd, the evening’s entertainment is John Abrams’ Animal Magic. Mr. Abrams combines world class magic with live exotic pets. Through zany comedy and stunning magic, John’s animals appear in ways and do things that leave you talking about it for weeks to come. The show begins at 7:00 p.m., so come by early for a choice spot!

On Tuesday, July 24th, teens will be able to learn the basics about handwriting analysis and have fun applying it to handwriting samples. They will also take a look at their own handwriting and decide what they think about graphology as a tool to understanding people. On Friday, July 27th, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. there will be a Guitar Hero® Tournament. Prizes awarded for first, second and third place winners.

On Tuesday, July 10th, there will be a Mystery Movie for teens, ages 13-18, from 6:00-7:45 p.m. Call the Library for the title. Teens can be a detective following the clues to solve the murder mystery, Cracks in the Wall, on Friday, July 13th from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Summer Reading Club Weekly Events

The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues, has a number of events for children, teens and adults during the week of June 25-30, 2007.

On Monday, June 25th, the evening’s entertainment is “The Buster Balloon Show” which is a frenzied and frantic blend of balloon twisting madness and vaudeville style comedy. The show begins at 7:00 p.m., so come by early for a choice spot!

Beginning Tuesday, June 26th at 2:00 p.m., children in 3rd grade and up can discover the world during the weekly Tuesday afternoon Geography Club.

Wednesdays, starting June 27th and Thursdays, starting June 28th, both at 2:00 p.m., grade school age children can also enjoy the weekly Wednesday Chess Club and the Thursday Origami Club. Skilled and unskilled are most welcome!

Two weekly family movies are being offered—Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 11:00 a.m.

The Library offers five storytimes each week—Tuesday mornings at 11:00 a.m. for preschoolers, Wednesday mornings at 11:00 a.m. for toddlers, as well as family storytimes on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m.

For teens, ages 13-18, there will be a UNO® tournament on Tuesday, June 26th from 6:30-7:45 p.m. and a Clue® Game Tournament on Friday June 29th from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

For adults the Library has two book discussion groups that will meet Thursday, June 28th. The afternoon group meets from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and will be discussing Manhunt by James Swanson. The evening group’s discussion of Judge and Jury by James Patterson will be from 6:00-7:45 p.m. New members are always welcome to attend.

Starting June 23, 2007, everyone from 2 to 102 years can register for a summer reading program and earn rewards, as well as the opportunity to win other great prizes. The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues, will also be offering programs for all ages.

Come by and take a sneak peek at the programs and incentives being offered this summer, too! On display in the Library’s lobby are some of our 2007 Summer Reading Club "enticements" to encourage children, teens and adults to read like crazy all summer long.

The theme for children ages 2-12 is Get a Clue @ the Buena Park Library for children ages 2-12, with special programs every Monday night. You Never Know @ the Buena Park Library is the teen program, for ages 13 through 12th grade, which gives teens opportunities to participate in game and dance tournaments. The Adult Summer Reading program celebrates its second year with Find It @ the Buena Park Library, and participants will have a chance to win one of many great incentive baskets.

Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month -- Display in the Library lobby -- now through the end of May

The Buena Park Library District celebrates Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month with a display of Asian and Hawaiian arts, crafts and other cultural items. The display is on exhibit in the Library lobby and runs now through the end of May 2007. The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues.

Objects on display range from musical instruments, clothing, jewelry, and art objects. Also available for checkout are books which highlight the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience.

May is Asian / Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month—a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. In May 1990, President George H.W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States May 7, 1843 and to mark the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid tracks for the Central Pacific portion of the railroad were Chinese immigrants. According to U.S. Census statistics, there are 16.3 million residents who said they were Asian or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, alone or in combination with another race.

The BOGO Cookbook Sale at the Guild Bookstore Continues! We're Doing a Children's Books BOGO, Too!

The monster BOGO sale of cookbooks continues through Saturday, June 2nd, 2007, in the Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library’s Bookstore, located on the 2nd floor of the Buena Park Library District, 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues. It is a “buy one at regular price, get one free of equal or lesser value” – in other words, a BOGO! There are STILL some really good choices available.

There will also be a large BOGO sale of children’s books, beginning Monday, June 4th, 2007, and ending Saturday, June 30th, 2007. There large selection of titles available for this sale, but remember – it doesn’t start until June 4th!

The Guild Bookstore sales proceeds benefit the Volunteer Guild which supports all the Library’s programs and collections. The Guild is a 100% sponsor of the Youth Services and Adult programs offered annually here at the Library. If you want to become a member, it is just $5.00 a year!

An Imagination Celebration Event at the Buena Park Library: "Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex"

Swazzle – the amazing puppetry duo of Sean and Patrick Johnson – will be presenting "Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex" at the Buena Park Library District on Saturday, May 19, 2007 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Join us for a special program and workshop designed for the whole family. Join Swazzle puppeteers (www.swazzle.com) in an interactive puppet show about Harry, a young mammal of the Late Cretaceous Period, who learns that meaning of true friendship. Afterwards, the attendees will be able to make their own puppets in the workshop following the show. Mariachi magicians Rafael and Katia will present the “Magic of Reading,” an hour of magic and entertainment that will surprise and delight everyone in the family on Monday, April 30th starting at 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the downstairs auditorium at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, between Knott and Western Avenues.

The Definitive 200 -- Where Would You Be Without Them?

The Buena Park Library District is pleased to announce the addition of more than 60 titles to our Music CD collection for your listening pleasure. This is in response to the Definitive 200 campaign launched by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The campaign which asks “Where Would You Be without Them?” is an attempt to rank some of the most commercially and critically successful albums of all time. Gourd Art Exhibit on Display from March through April

Art pieces created from a stunning variety of gourds are now on display at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. The decorative and utilitarian pieces, created by artist Fayme Harper, are on exhibit in the Library lobby now through the end of April 2007.

Objects on display range from musical instruments, such as the ocarina and guiro, to birdhouses, to fanciful creatures and gourds adorned with Celtic knot work. The artist states that her art designs have been inspired by her interest in “primitive archery and fantasy art.”

The artist said she fell in love with this medium four years ago after a visit to a farm in Fallbrook, California. The gourds are embellished with a wide variety of materials including paint, gold leaf, beads, Teneriffe weaving, and eggshells. Techniques such as carving and pyrography (the burning of the gourd) have also been employed. Harper states that all over the world, people have used hard-shelled gourds for centuries for eating and drinking vessels, musical instruments, sacred masks and costumes, and art.

Free Financial Planning Seminar -- Wednesday, March 28

The Buena Park Library District is sponsoring a free financial awareness seminar presented by Buena Park Chamber of Commerce members Peter Chow and Sylvia Woodside, who represent a large dealer/broker in financial planning. Annual Media Madness Sale Returns to the Buena Park Library District

Starting Saturday, March 10th, 2007, the Buena Park Library District will be taking part in the annual reading program sponsored by the In-N-Out Burger. the Volunteer Guild celebrates the return of its ever popular Media Madness Sale in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. The sale ends March 31st at 4:30 p.m., but don’t wait until then to get the best bargains ever! It is a “Buy One, Get One of Equal or Lesser Value” of all sale items such as: VHS videos, CD-Roms, Sheet Music books, and all kinds of audio music in CDs, Cassettes and LPs – that’s long-playing albums, folks. Yes, WE HAVE A LOT of LPs, of all different kinds – classical, easy listening, rock … you name it. In fact, come see for yourself! Teen Tech Week March 3rd - 10th at the Buena Park Library District

Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., is pleased to announce its participation in the American Library Association’s first annual Teen Tech Week, March 3rd – 10th, 2007. The Library will join thousands of other libraries across the country who are encouraging teens to use their libraries for the different technologies available to them as they "Get Connected @ your library®." This program is designed to show teens that the library is a trusted resource for accessing information and that librarians are the experts who can help them develop the skills they need to use electronic resources effectively and efficiently.

Youth Services Librarian, Phyllis Nisle, hopes to increase teen awareness of the different technological services that are available at the Library by offering a variety of events in which teens can participate. Events planned for this week include an Online Scavenger Hunt, a video contest, a Web Design class on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 am – 10:00 am (pre-registration is required), and a Sudoku Tournament on Tuesday, March 6th from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. California Young Reader Medal Voting now Happening at your School and at the Buena Park Library District

It is once again time to vote for your favorite book among the titles selected as nominees for the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM)! Young people in our state are being encouraged by their schools and public libraries to read some wonderful books and VOTE fore their favorite(s). The Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue, has a decorative display of the current CYRM titles nominated, and we also have ballots for you to place your vote for your favorite books. Turn in the ballots with Phyllis Nisle, the Youth Services Librarian, or Mary Ivelia, our Children’s Programming Coordinator.

The California Young Reader Medal program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal. Young people suggest the names of favorite books for nomination, or teachers and librarians note repeatedly read or requested titles, and these are submitted to the California Young Reader Medal Committee. Members of the committee read the suggested books, discuss their merits and appeal to children, and then decide upon a well-balanced list of nominees.

The CYRM program is sponsored by four statewide organizations committed to books and reading: the California Association of Teachers of English, the California Library Association, the California Reading Association, and the California School Library Association. A committee of representatives from each organization coordinates CYRM activities at the state level. To be considered for nomination, a book must be an original work of fiction published within the last four years by a living author. Recommendations for nomination are due each year by April 1 for consideration as a nominee the following year. It is a two-year cycle from the time of nomination by students to the presentation of the California Young Reader Medal to the winning authors and illustrators in the Primary and Picture Books for Older Readers categories.

Books are nominated for the medal in five categories: Primary (Grades K-2), Intermediate (Grades 3-5), Middle/Junior High School (Grades 6-9) and Young Adult (Grades 9-12).

Students may read and vote for books in any and all categories, but they must read all the books nominated in a category to be eligible to vote. Students read the nominated books from July through March and vote for their favorite(s) through their teachers and/or librarians Teachers and librarians provide ballots for the students, compile vote totals, and submit results to the CYRM committee.

All CYRM ballots must be postmarked by April 1 of each year. Make it easy on yourself and turn it in at your school or the Buena Park Library District! We’ll take care of the ballots filled out or dropped off here.

New Live Homework Help Service Offered from the Convenience of your Home through Library's Webpage

Parents and students! The Buena Park Library District has free “Live Homework Help” now available from our website at www.buenapark.lib.ca.us. Students in grades 4-12 and above can access this service free from their home computers. You will need a Buena Park Library card to access the site that is being made available from Tutor.com’s web-based online classroom. This service is available from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. any day of the week. You can now ask a live online tutor to help you with homework questions in math, science, social studies and English.

This homework help service is also available to Spanish speaking students from Sunday through Thursday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. El programa “Live Homework Help” (ayuda en vivo para la tarea) está disponible en Espanol por nuestra pagina de Internet de 3 pm a 7 pm Domingo a Jueves.

The California State Library Live Homework Help Grant Program makes this possible for students of the Buena Park Library community. The Library is providing the online connectivity to this unique service through its webpage. The tutors are certified teachers, college professors and graduate students who have undergone extensive background checks prior to hiring. The program is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, and is administered by the California State Library.

Blood Drive at Library for St. Jude Medical Center

The Buena Park Library District is having its second American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2007, in the downstairs auditorium. This time the drive is supporting the St. Jude Medical Center. Laura Ingalls Wilder visits the Buena Park Library District

In honor of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday (February 7th), the Buena Park Library District will be hosting a very special program on Saturday, February 10th, at 3:00 p.m. in the downstairs auditorium. Ms. Judith Helton, a well-known Laura Ingalls Wilder reinactor, will be here for a one-woman show to share events and stories from Ms. Wilder’s life, plus she will have on display memorabilia from numerous Laura Ingalls Wilder museums from across the country. All ages are welcome to “meet” Laura Ingalls Wilder as she talks about life on the prairie and reads her stories from the “Little House” books. Christmas and New Year's Holiday Closure Dates -- Library and the Volunteer Guild Bookstore

The Buena Park Library District will be closed on Monday, December 25th, in recognition of Christmas, and will be resuming normal hours on Tuesday, December 26th, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. The library will also be closed on Monday, January 1st, for New Year's Day, reopening on Tuesday, January 2nd for normal hours.

The Volunteer Guild Bookstore will be closed from Monday, December 18th, through Wednesday, January 3rd, and will be resuming regular bookstore hours on Thursday, January 4th, opening at 12 p.m. and closing at 7:30 p.m.

Volunteer Guild Having Members Only Double Discount Sale, Saturday, Dec. 16

The Volunteer Guild of the Buena Park Library, located at the Buena Park Library District, 7150 La Palma Avenue, is offering a few hours of unbridled joy for Volunteer Guild members at very reasonable prices. This annual special sales event will be held Saturday, December 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Guild’s second floor bookstore. Tables full of donations, including a large selection of audio books, music CDs and cassettes, music LPs, VHS movies, magazines, Christmas themed books of all kinds, and a ton of fiction and non-fiction titles will be on display for perusal and purchase. Tinker Bell Collectibles on Display

A fantastic collection of Tinker Bell collectibles are now on display at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. Caroline Egan, a Buena Park Library District staff member, has been collecting Tinker Bell memorabilia for a few years but states that Tinker Bell has always been a childhood favorite. A small portion of her collection is on exhibit in the Library lobby now through the end of December 2006.

Included in the display are mugs, watches, snow globes, music boxes, figurines, original artwork, pins, key chains, tea sets, desk accessories, and a set of "Disney Fairies," a new series of books about Tinker Bell’s friends from Pixie Hollow. The collectibles are from Tokyo Disney, Disneyland Paris and from London’s Disney Store, as well as our local Disneyland.

Tinker Bell originally appeared in the J. M. Barrie play "Peter Pan" in 1904. According to the Disney website, the pixie debuted on May 5, 1953 in the animated movie "Peter Pan" and is still used as an icon for Walt Disney films and television shows.

Library Closure -- Veterans' Day

Buena Park Library's Activities for Children - Halloween and After School

On Tuesday, October 31st, the Buena Park Library is having a Halloween Celebration in its downstairs auditorium, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. We are going to have some fun and games on Halloween Night and we are requesting all the children who attend to be IN COSTUME! We are planning games, crafts and a Costume Parade! So come ready to have a ghoulishly good time! Starting Wednesday, November 1st, we are having our annual "Krafts for Kids" event in November and December. The first program begins Wednesday, November 1st and runs through to December 13th, with no class on November 22 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. It is flu season again. Where do I get a flu shot?

Attention seniors 60 years of age and older. Receive free flu shots at the annual Flu Shot Clinic on Monday, November 6, 2006 at the Buena Park Senior Center, 8150 Knott Avenue in the Community Recreation Center. Flu Shots will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on a first come, first served basis or until serum runs out. Call the Senior Center at 1-714-236-3870 for additional information.

The County of Orange Office on Aging also has an updated schedule of additional flu clinics. Call the Office on Aging at 1-800-510-2020 or 1-714-567-7500 or go on line with www.findaflushot.com to find a flu shot clinic near you.

A flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu and avoid unnecessary complications or hospitalizations. However, there are additional preventive measures you can take to further reduce your chance of getting sick and spreading any respiratory illnesses to others: cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often with soap and water, try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, avoid close contact with those who are sick and if you get sick, stay home until you are better.

Teen Read Month Planned for October 2006 at the Buena Park Library District

Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave., celebrates Teen Read Week for the entire month of October. The Library will join thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, “Get Active @ your library®.” This year’s theme encourages teens to use the resources in their library to lead active lives.

Youth Services Librarian, Phyllis Nisle, hopes to increase teen literacy locally by offering a Get Active Reading Program from October 2nd through October 31st. Participating teens in the 7th – 12th grade can pick up a Get Active BINGO card at the Information and Reference desk beginning October 2nd or download it from our web page at www.buenapark.lib.ca.us and look for BINGO hotlink under “Library Information Links and Forms” on the first page, or just click here. Complete instructions are on the BINGO card. All participants will receive a Get Active bookmark at the time they receive their BINGO card. The first 100 participants to turn in their completed BINGO card will receive a special READ wrist band and will have their name entered into a drawing for a great prize.

Other activities and programs planned for Teen Read Month include a bookmark design contest, a Dance Dance Revolution Tournament that will be held Saturday, October 14th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and a Karaoke Contest to be held Saturday, October 28th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. These last 2 musical events will be held in the downstairs auditorium. New Book Discussion Groups for Adults Starting at the Buena Park Library

Two new book discussion groups for adults, hosted by the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Ave. (between Knott and Western), will begin Thursday, September 28th, 2006.

The Thursday afternoon group meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the Library’s board room on the 2nd floor. Participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Book selections for this twice-a-month group evolve around a predetermined theme. Participants are encouraged to read different titles, thus giving others in the group new ideas for future reads. The themes for September and October include a “classic” title that will be discussed September 28th, a book that has been made into a movie on October 12th, and a nonfiction book on October 26th.

The Thursday evening group meets at 6:30 p.m. in the board room on the 4th Thursday of the month. This is a traditional book discussion group in which participants read and discuss a pre-selected title. September’s selection is The Keep by Jennifer Egan. Upcoming titles that will be discussed include The Sea by John Banville, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.

Come Celebrate Endless Summer at the Buena Park Library Volunteer Guild Bookstore and its Vendors' Faire

As our long California summer draws to a close, it’s time for us to have a “NIGHT OUT” with food, fun and shopping! On Tuesday, September 19th, the Volunteer Guild Bookstore at the Buena Park Library, located on the 2nd floor at 7150 La Palma Avenue, and Ms. Sandy Smith of SLS Creative Business Solutions will present its popular Vendors’ Faire from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to all interested parties.

A Flip-Flop Contest will be held at 6:00 p.m. for all those who wear their most creative flip-flops. There will be complimentary chair massages provided by Smith Chiropractic, too. Prize tickets are earned for attending the event, making vendor purchases, booking a show with any of the home-based business being represented at the faire, and for each book purchased in the bookstore during the faire. Free refreshments will be served for a limited time.

Author Talk and Book Signing on the Historic Ridge Route Highway at the Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District will present an author talk and book signing with Southern California author and highway historian Harrison I. Scott, speaking about his recent book on one of the most historic highways in our state — “Ridge Route: The Road That United California.”

The presentation at Buena Park Library District, 7150 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, CA 90620, will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 in the 2nd floor Board Room. The program will cover the highway that links Northern and Southern California via Los Angeles and Bakersfield. When it opened in 1915 the Ridge Route was celebrated as a marvel of mountain highway engineering. It has been improved and renamed several times in the years that followed, among them: U.S. Highway 99, also called “The Ridge Alternate,” and Interstate 5.

Find Your Treasure @ the Library -- September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month - a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

During the month of September the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue between Knott and Western Avenues, will be giving all 1st time new borrowers a treasure bag. Inside they will find a pencil, a bookmark and a special pirate coloring page. In addition, all new borrowers will be able to enter an opportunity drawing for a family pack of 4 Knott’s Berry Farm Theme Park tickets generously donated by Knott’s Berry Farm.

To get your free library card, present verification of your current California street address (e.g. CA Driver’s License or ID card) to the Check-Out desk. Children 17 and under must have parent or guardian present.

The Buena Park Library has books, magazines, DVD’s, Videos, music CD’s, audiobooks, Internet connections and a variety of databases than can be accessed from our website. The Library also offers several programs to stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Preschool story hours expose young children to the joy of reading, and our librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests. Congratulations and Thank You, Buena Park -- The Library's Blood Drive was a Resounding Success!

The Buena Park Library District and the American Red Cross were terrific partners on Thursday, August 17, 2006, for the Library’s first hosting of an American Red Cross Blood Drive. Not only did the Library meet its goal of 24 donors, we beat it! The Blood Drive brought in a total of 41 units which, according to the Red Cross, will save 123 lives. So, on behalf of the Buena Park Library District, a special “shout out” of tremendous thanks goes to all the donors, both in Buena Park and from other communities, who came in to our facility on that day to donate blood. Excellent job, one and all!

“Many of the participants said that holding the Blood Drive here was very convenient for them, so we are hoping to have another one in April during National Library Week, April 15-21, 2007,” said Kathleen Wade, Public Services Manager. “We hope that our next one will be as successful as this one was.”

Vendor Recall Issued on Toys Given by Library's Summer Reading Program

A vendor recall from Highsmith due to lead content has been issued on bendable toys that many public libraries across the country, including those in Buena Park, used as prizes during Summer Reading Programs for children.

The toys, a bendable dog and cat (image right), were found to have 0.4 and 0.24 percent of lead. The maximum safety limit is currently 0.06 percent. The toys are roughly 3.75 inches long and are similar in shape to a lollipop.

“We’d like all children and parents to return these toys ASAP to the Buena Park Library District for safe disposal,” said library director Louise Mazerov. “We’ve got other reading prizes available in exchange for these bendable toys. We’ll be happy to replace them.”

According to The Star Press newspaper website, the Indiana State Department of Health has sent a letter to the Indiana-based distributor of the bendable toys to urge a voluntary recall. Stamped “Made in China,” no other identifying information is available. The matter has been referred to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for further investigation and follow-up.

The Buena Park Library District is having an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2006 in the downstairs auditorium. Appointments are appreciated, and potential donors are requested to call 714.826.4100 x125 or go to www.givelife.org and put in our sponsor code: BPL to make your appointments. Either way is really simple. The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues.

The American Red Cross has provided a couple of incentives to help donors get here: all participants will receive a coupon for a free “Skillet Queso” appetizer at Chili’s and everyone has an opportunity to enter a raffle to win a $1,000 gas gift card.

Nautical Memorabilia on Display in July and August

Nautical memorabilia are now on display at the Buena Park Library District, located at 7150 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park, between Knott and Western Avenues. Mr. James Paterson, a longtime Buena Park resident, has been collecting maritime artifacts since the early 1960’s. A small portion of his large collection is on exhibit in the Library lobby now through the end of August 2006.

Mr. Paterson served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 - 1979. Mr. Paterson’s collection includes U.S. Navy magazines, crew books, postcards, signal flags, photographs, plaques, and pennants. Some of his most interesting relics are from the USS Dixie (AD-14), a “destroyer tender” which is a ship that provided repair and technical services to destroyers and other warships. A piece of the deck, a rivet from the hull and even a porthole from the USS Dixie are on view. One of the longest serving vessels in the Navy, the USS Dixie was decommissioned in 1983 and scrapped in 1993.

Also displayed are some memorabilia from the Cunard Line ships RMS Queen Mary and MV Britannic. Menus from 1937 evoke a time when transatlantic travel was mainly by ship.
