Change in Meeting Date for August 2009 Library Board of Trustees Meeting

The August meeting of the Buena Park Library District Board of Trustees has been rescheduled to ensure all members are present to discuss changes to the 2009/2010 budget due to the recent passage of the State budget allowing the State to borrow 8% of the District's property tax revenue. This will require additional cuts to the Library's budget in addition to the 10% reduction already in the budget. This Board meeting will take place at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, in the Board Room located on the second floor of the Library. All Board meetings are open to the public.

American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Library

The Buena Park Library District is having an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2009 in the downstairs community room.

Appointments are appreciated, and potential donors are requested to go to www.givelife.org and put in our sponsor code: BPL to make your appointment. It is really very simple -- save a life and donate a pint.

The Library is located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Knott and Western Avenues.

Cracking the Case Using Handwriting Analysis

On Saturday, August 8th, 2009 graphologist Paula Sassi will present a program on handwriting analysis at the Buena Park Library District. This program will appeal to teens and adults. Please join us in the Downstairs Meeting Room at 2:00 pm for an afternoon of mystery solving through handwriting.

Uncover the secrets revealed in the strokes of handwriting to help solve real and fictional mysteries. Handwriting analysis can be a useful tool in discovering the honesty or dishonesty of the wrtier. Hundreds of indicators found in the strokes of writing can reveal whether the writer has a tendency to lie, cheat, steal or worse. Learn some basic dishonesty indicators and help solve interesting cases using handwriting analysis.

Paper Flower Making Class at the Buena Park Library

A paper flower making class will be held at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

Handmade crepe paper flowers are elegant, delicate and easy to make. Join instructor Rosa Armendariz to learn the basics of paper flower making from start to finish. Instruction will be given on making five different styles of flowers so that you will leave with a completed bouquet.

This program will be of interest for teens through adults. All adult attendees will receive an entry drawing slip for a chance to win one of several gift baskets being given as prizes at the end of the Adult Summer Reading Program.

The sale begins Monday, July 20th and lasts until Saturday, July 25th, but don't wait until the last minute to get the best selection! Cash will be the only accepted method of payment. All Guild proceeds are used to generously fund and support Library programs and collections.

Harp & Flute Music Program at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a Harp & Flute Music Program on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Downstairs Community Room.

The program features Peggy Skomal playing Concert and Celtic Harp, and Susan Craig Winsberg playing a variety of flutes, recorders and pennywhistles. Together they perform Celtic, Classical and Folk music with contrasting moods and melodies. Explanations and stories about the instruments and music are presented in an educational and entertaining manner for all age groups.

One lucky adult attendee will receive a deli restaurant coupon, and all adult attendees will receive an entry drawing slip for a chance to win one of several gift baskets being given as prizes at the end of the Buena Park Library's Adult Summer Reading Program.

In Stitches: A Knitting and Crocheting Group


The next meeting of In Stitches will be on Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 2-4 pm in the 2nd floor Board Room at the Buena Park Library District.

Please join us as we knit or crochet items for charity. The group has already made afghans and lap robes to give to some of the residents of the Knott Avenue Care Center in Buena Park. They have also been knitting and crocheting blankets and baby items for Project Linus and Newborns in Need.

Wii Bowling at the Library (for Adults)

The Wii Bowling Alley at the Buena Park Library will reopen on Monday, July 13th for 4 weeks of virtual bowling fun. The lanes in the 2nd floor Board Room will be open from 2:00-3:00 pm for all adults to try their hand at virtual bowling.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the following Wii Bowling dates:

  • Monday, July 20th: 2-3 pm
  • Monday, July 27th: 2-3 pm
  • Monday, August 3rd; 2-3 pm

The Wii interactive video game is a fun and easy way to get some light exercise and socialize with friends. Wii bowling is easy to learn and the motions are quite similar to real bowling. Players stand or sit in front of a screen and manipulate a remote control to "throw a virtual ball." Join us for a little exercise and fun! ADULTS only -- no children please.

Summer Reading Clubs for All Ages at the Buena Park Library District

The Buena Park Library District will be hosting three Summer Reading Programs for children, teens, and adults this summer. Children, ages 2 to 12, are invited to join the Home Run Readers Summer Reading Club for a summer filled with reading, prizes, entertainment, and fun. Teens can participate in the Grand-Slam--Summer Reading Club, for a summer of reading, prizes, game tournaments and more. Adults, 18 and over, have their own summer reading program, Slide into Summer Reading, where they have a chance to win one of many great thematic gift baskets.

Sign-ups for the Teen Summer Reading Club begin June 19th with a kick-off celebration from 2:00-4:00 p.m. that will include Wii games such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Guitar Hero, as well as, caricaturist Dave Boatman and food.

The Children's and Adult Summer Reading Clubs begin June 20th with a kick-off celebration for the children from 2:00-4:00 p.m. that will include a petting zoo, balloon animals, face painting, games, and more. On Monday evenings all summer long, the Library will host special entertainment programs for families including magicians, jugglers, storytellers, and more.

Teens will have a chance to participate in a variety of video and board game tournaments, as well as, a special after-hours Amazing Race on August 15th.

Adults will be able to enjoy an author talk by Gustavo Arellano in June, a harp and flute concert in July, and learn how handwriting is used in Cracking the Case with graphologist Paula Sassi in August. All reading clubs continue through August 22nd, 2009.

Gustavo Arellano to Speak at the Buena Park Library

Popular author and columnist, Gustavo Arellano, will be speaking on Thursday, June 25, 2009 from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Downstairs Meeting Room at the Buena Park Library District.

Arellano is an Orange County native, a nationally bestselling author, syndicated columnist, and voice of the Mexican-American community. He is a staff writer with the OC Weekly and a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Op/Ed pages.

His writing credits include: a nationally syndicated column, ¡Ask a Mexican!, author of two books, ¡Ask a Mexican!, based on the writings in his column, and Orange County: A Personal History, part personal narrative, part cultural history.

During this program, Gustavo Arellano will be talking about his books. Books will be available for sale and Arellano will be signing them after the discussion.

Injury Prevention Seminar at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a program entitled: Injury Prevention Seminar at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in the 2nd floor Library Board Room. This program, emphasizing work injury prevention, covers all aspects of work that require standing, lifting, bending, and sitting. The information presented will be particularly helpful for heavy labor jobs. Home care, including sleep positioning, stretching, and strengthening exercises, will also be covered.

The program will be presented by Dr. Steve Smith. Dr. Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and has been a post graduate extension faculty member of two chiropractic colleges, training extern doctors.

Developing an Unforgettable Image : A Program for Women at the Buena Park Library

The Buena Park Library District will present a program entitled: Developing an Unforgettable Image: A Program for Women, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in the 2nd floor Library Board Room. During the program, you will learn to reinvent your image and wardrobe through the use of accessories and make-up, keeping you in line with the latest trends and styles.

In today's market you must make a statement in order to excel, and it starts with developing your image. You have 30 seconds to make a first impression. Remember, it's all about the WOW factor!!! If you are interested in entering or re-entering the work force or working your way up the corporate ladder, this program is for you.

Celebrate Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) at the Buena Park Library

Join the Buena Park Library as it celebrates Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) during the week of April 27 through May 2nd. Dia is a nationwide celebration of children, families and reading held annually, and this year the library will have 3 special events for children and their families. Enjoy the Magic of Rafael on Monday, April 27th at 6:30 pm. Storyteller Tio Alec and his pink gorilla will take you on a treasure hunt on Thursday, April 30th at 7 pm. There will be a Children's Fun Fiesta with games, prizes and more on Saturday, May 2nd from 2 pm to 4 pm. Children will also be able to create their own "Book about Me" during the Fiesta.

Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) is an enhancement of Children's Day, which began in 1925. Children's Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. Dia brings families together and emphasizes the importance of literacy for every child regardless of linguistic or cultural background. Hundreds of libraries, schools and communities throughout the country will host celebrations and programs that honor multiculturalism and stress the importance of books and literacy.

Celebrate National Library Week at the Buena Park Library

Join us as we celebrate National Library Week at the Buena Park Library located at 7150 La Palma Ave., between Western and Knott Aves. We will kick off the week by taking a "Journey through Grimm's Fairytales" at 6:30 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009. This performance will feature a dynamic combination of dance, theatre, story-telling, clown and puppets with an emphasis on the importance of literature and a celebration of National Library Week. This will be an all-ages show, especially geared towards children 3 to 14 years old.

"Worlds Connect" at the Buena Park Library as we celebrate National Library Week starting Sunday, April 12 through Saturday, April 18, 2009. This is a special time to celebrate the Library and all the wonderful possibilities and worlds that open up within the pages of a book, a movie or other materials you can find at the Library. With a free Library card for California residents, a card holder can check out books for three weeks on nearly any subject imaginable, listen to music and audio books, borrow a current movie for one week and use the Library's online databases from home when you access our web page at www.buenaparklibrary.org. Buena Park Library Celebrates its 90th Birthday during National Library Week

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Buena Park Library District located at 7150 La Palma Ave. To help celebrate this momentous occasion, the Library is holding an Open House on Saturday, April 18th from 10 AM to 2 PM. The fun begins with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 10 AM followed by storytelling, refreshments and multicultural performances. The multicultural performances will include Ballet Folkorico by students in Project SAY, Hula/Tahitian dancing by Hiya Papaya Productions, Indian Bollywood dancing, and a Korean kayakum performance by Esther Lee. Please join us as we celebrate our 90th Birthday!

Thanks to the Buena Park Women's Club petition for a public library, the Buena Park Library District was formed in 1919. What began as a simple collection of books by the Buena Park Women's Club has grown into the full service library of today, serving the diverse community of Buena Park and the surrounding communities of Southern California.

Wii Bowling for Adults (for the Young at Heart)

Adults are invited to come to the Buena Park Library to participate in our weekly Wii bowling games on Monday mornings from April 6 through May 11, 2009. The downstairs community room will be turned into a bowling alley from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

Free Computer Classes (Clases de Computacion) for Spanish Speakers

The Buena Park Library District will be teaching a series of four (4) Spanish computer classes on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm during the month of April in the Library's Boardroom. The topics are:

  • Introduccion a la Red (April 8th)
  • Correro Electronico (April 15th)
  • Microsoft Word Basico (April 22nd)
